Let's give the kid a break. How about this scenario. The fledgling pilot finds himself low and slow down on the deck feeling very vulnerable. He notices a farmer below is taking a bead on him with his old Damascus steel barrelled, mule ear shotgun. Pulling the stick back into his stomach (he's heard the 109 has a very fast climb rate you see) and thus slowing even more, he feels the vibration indicating a stall is coming. Pushing the nose over as he was taught and in the process putting the 109 into the vertical, perhaps he noticed how detailed the ground now appeared to him. In spite of that he pushed the throttle all the way forward to regain flying speed planning then to pull up. Yes, mama might have been so proud, perhaps he got it all right, well, except for that last bit?
And if, by lucky chance, he still had his joystick in his hand when the 109's nose entered the mud he made it into Valhalla?
