Things were better in the time of Thatcher but not because of her. Twenty years before that, things were better than Thatcher's time...and so on back into the fifties. Today's medical advances notwithstanding, things were much better fifty years ago although the effects of the war lingered on in times when we hadn't got two pennies to scratch our arses with. Or at least they seemed that way to me.
Today, our police seem barely able to hold the line against the rising scourge of immigrant gangs as well as home grown criminals. Our public transport system, especially the railways, seem more suited to the movement of cattle than humans. Hospitals, the ones that are not privatized, are filthy incubators of MRSA and other lethal cultures. Waiting lists for treatment are a race from which either the patient/consultant or the undertaker will arise victorious The schools seem to have stabilized but only because they can't get any worse. Conkers on strings and spiders in matchboxes belong in those stories by Richmal Crompton. Nowadays, knives are de rigueur and mobiles provide much more interest. Street violence fuelled by drink and drugs also account for declining standards of conduct on the highways and byways by aggressive and rotten drivers.
Other than that, we are still enjoying those 'broad sunlit uplands' that Churchill promised us.
'Find your enemy and shoot him down - everything else is unimportant.'
