Calm down. We no longer require your assistance down in the gloomy archives. You may divest yourself of the gas mask and you may put away the insect repellent and handy Faulty brand pump action spray gun. Why?
It seems that around 4 PM C51 fell down those 3,000 crumbling steps after a day long binge on beans and beer. The resulting gaseous emissions killed all the fleas, and rendered all the bats unconscious. Unfortunately the horrendous stench simply made the beaver-sized rats think there was a delightfully odorous feast prepared for them and C51 had to fight for his very life. In the ensuing battle C51 accidentally staggered into the moat and all his splashing and cursing woke several of the remaining gators. The gators got a whiff of the very smelly C51 and lost all interest but instantly made for the line of unsuspecting beaver-sized rats now lining the slippery edge of the moat.
According to a shaken C51 it was a near thing indeed. He made his escape up the steps while the rats and gators were doing mortal battle. He only paused once at the top of those crumbling steps to look back. In the dimness he could see almost nothing but he clearly heard the squeals of the dying rats and the loud chomping and grinding of deadly reptile jaws on rodent bone. He said that those terrible sounds were simply blood curdling.
As his innards were still unsettled and his drawers racked by explosive emissions we thought long and hard about throwing him back down those steps but finally agreed that further exposure might kill the gators. So instead, we just tossed him out into the HWH garden with a pillow and blanket closed the windows and tightly bolted the door.
