The allies, particularly we British, denigrated the quality of Italian aircraft generally for propaganda purposes - but the truth is they could hold their own. The CR42 could at least match the Hurricane in a dog-fight and the G50 and Mc200 were also very nimble and a delight to fly. When the Mc200 was re-engined with the DB601 and DB605 it became the Mc202 and Mc205 respectively - and they ranked among the best fighters of the war.
Re the war games: The 109 would never have appeared over Duxford unless the pilot had got lost and then certainly ending up as a POW or being rescued from the Channel. This was one of the faults in the BoB campaign which may still be inherent. I remember being pursued well north of London on many occasions where historically they would never have ventured except on a one-way ticket..
