Those flying instructor stories capture what must have been a typical day at FTS and OTU - at least as far as HWH Squadron was concerned. Do you remember that rumour which was circulating during those dark days? The numbers of aircraft lost during those training programmes rose to such proportions that Goering decided that the Luftwaffe would be better employed elsewhere and he could confidently leave the destruction of Fighter Command to us.

I though that was a bit much really...especially when Galland compounded the insult by suggesting that if we melted down all the kites we had wrecked they could be converted into enough woks for every family in China.

Mind you...we stood up for Goering in our own perverse way when Park made a flying visit during the Battle. He told us that Goering hadn't got the sense he was born with - but we told him he had.
