JR2, you are surely correct in your assessment of USS Saratoga. She was a good lady indeed. My father in law was still pissed some 60 years later about her eventual fate. To have that great ship blown away in an atomic bomb test was shameful. Every discussion we had about the ship would end with something like "Well ya know what the hell they did to her don't ya"? A few years ago we saw a documentary about the ships involved in the test and they showed video of Saratoga's remains.
I think the German Prinz Egan of Bismark fame also was there.
It seems every good warship should be spared. They along with the men who crewed them earned it.
