The only things I buy from the Rusty Pick are legendary modules, which are bought with the scrip. 50 scrip buys one module. Legendary modules are then combined with legendary cores (which you get a lot of if you participate in events) to apply legendary effects to weapons and armor. Like if you build a rifle and want to make it Vampire or Instigating or whatever you need these modules and cores to do it. Problem is, the effect that gets rolled is completely random.
At every train station, the Whitesprings Mall and at the Rusty Pick are legendary machines where you can deposit any unwanted legendary item and convert it to scrip. 3-star weapons get the most. Power armor pieces are valuable too. Everything else nets less scrip, but if you aren't going to use it, no reason to hang on to it and unless you're completely broke it's best to use your legendaries in this way. So you can build more legendaries haha.
The machine at the Rusty Pick has been disabled recently (is it working again?) because evidently players were exploiting it in some way. But the ones at the mall and train stations work.
Just about every time I log on I gather up the legendaries I've collected and don't want, and fast travel to the mall to convert them to scrip.
