There are certain areas of the game where you encounter a lot of well armored enemies, and it gets pretty resource intensive to hose them down with an automatic weapon.

In fact, I try to use melee weapons as much as possible in order to save ammo. Melee damage is doubled in VATS in New Vegas, so its got that going for it as well.
