So lets talk about low level flight. If anyone looks carefully at sectionals, they will see light gray lines with names such as VR-1024, IR-070 or SR-138. Those are low level routes for military aircraft. Route is usually 4 miles wide and typically military aircraft will fly with no more than 270 knots and around 500agl. Obviously that presents risks. There are birds, VFR traffic and obstacles, not to mention close proximity to the ground.
Student reads map and directs instructor to fly heading and speed. Idea is to teach student to read map and direct instructor to do certain things to remain on time while doing quick calculations in flight. Final point should be within 10 seconds. For a 30-40 minute flight at 240GS and 500 AGL that's a pretty tight margin.
Some low levels are very picturesque.
Radar altimeter is showing 500 feet.
Climbing terrain can be quite fun... there is a button we push before starting low level to silence terrain warnings.
Fat terrain is OK too.
And rivers.
But always there is a certain distance we have to maintain from objects.
