I did detail them and the diversity is really not that vast among simmers when it comes to a SP experience.
You think, let's agree to disagree
Just about everyone agrees that they simply want an immersive, deep campaign. It doesn't have to be dynamic, but it could be.
Well, I read the sim forums since 15 years, and I've seen lots of different descriptions, sometimes contradictory of what the posters called an "immersive, deep campaign". Immersion is such a personal feeling that I think it is different for every simmer. Without precise description "Immersion" is just a word, like "love".
Don't believe me? Go start a poll asking what's most important in a flight sim and I guarantee a good SP campaign would come in the top 3.
Sure, but a "good SP campaign" is still a vague description.
I can take RoF as an example. From even before the release, the players asked for an "RB2 style campaign", and after some years, the dev, with lots of work, involving a lot of community help (for the historical datas, the avatar stories, the newspapers articles, the translations, etc...). That was a big piece of work that had a big part of the RB2 campaign feature.... and when it was finally released, most of the players gave him a bit of test, flew a few missions, and finally ignored it. Why?
My take on it is that all the players asking for a "RB2 style campaign" had vague remembering of what it really was, remembering all the good, and forgetting all the bad (usual memory work), and when they finally got the RoF "RB2 style campaign", it was not what they expected... because what they expected wasn't the "RB2 style campaign", but to revive something that never existed, since the RB2 style was transformed into a myth by the usual memory work.
Actually, my feeling is that the problem with the player expectation is probably even worse than what I described. Not only is it impossible to build a flight sim with all the features that can be collected from the community wishes.... but even if a dev with a fortune could do it, it wouldn't be sufficient (and you can easily deduct it from the poster wording. They don't talk about "wanted feature", but about mandatory ones. They see the features they expect as the "syndical minimum", not to enjoy the game, but to consider the game as a "flight sim", so a game that they would dare to look at, to see if they could eventually enjoy it).
The thing that IMO the dev did wrong is that, even if they can't meet all these expectations, the expectation they can't ignore to keep the oltimer crowd (or at least a good part of it), is to give then a sandbox style game, so they can at least try to build they ideal game themthelves. That's why the unlocks go in the wrong directions. We'll see later if the DSever and the ME can reopen the sandbox.
