It was probably over, when they lost radio contact, 45 mins into the descent. That was likely past the 1800m mark. Perhaps they were lucky to survive previous trips. Maybe the structure was weakened with every descent. This was one trip too many.
I think it was 1 hour 45 minutes into the decent but agree.
A theory I have been considering is that they lost comms late in the decent and decided to continue, even though the sub was (according to what I have read) dependant on the surface vessel for navigation. They then miss calculated the remaining distance to the sea floor and came down hard, either then becoming intangled / stuck or imploding from the shock at max depth capacity.
