Thanks Kludger. The thing that made it possible is that someone had already taken the plain white C208 texture that comes with FSX and broken it out into a layered paint kit with things like shading and panel lines as separate layers. That allowed me to (mostly) just add the red, grey, and other unique details in solid colors and place their layers appropriately in Gimp.
