Well spotted, and well re-enacted. It's the little historical tidbits that are often so fascinating.
Activity like the Major's was seriously frowned upon. That could very easily have been two lost aircraft and pilots. Getting away with it only meant the brass were forced to reward the Major publicly. But I can guarantee he got a thorough chewing out to go along with that Silver Star.
