Holy smokes. Gold is over $4,200 and is continuing higher.
Some may remember several years ago when I said I bought a good bit of physical gold when it was mid eight hundred. I bought it not so much as an investment but as a physical insurance against a collapse of fiat currency. So it has gone up 5x from when I bought it.
I bought a bit of silver and it is booming too.
Incredible.

Precious metals are great to have in that delicate middle-ground between a high inflationary environment and a total economic collapse. You can’t eat gold and gold doesn’t make a very good building material in the event of a total economic collapse.

I have said to myself many times that you can't eat gold, in a total economic collapse and at that time it would become worthless. Better to have real food and medical items as well having weapons and ammo for self defense all for preservation of you and your family in a total economic collapse situation. In a non total economic collapse gold will still have value as demonstrated by it's rising value.

I bought a mountain of gold back in 2022.
Here's what most don't realize about gold in relation to inflation:
Metals lag inflation, on average, historically, by about 18 months to two years. So once inflation notches up, you've got some time before the metals start moving. In today's case, we've seen inflation subside, but now with tariff pressures, the perception is inflation may rear up again, and the data is beginning to support this. So naturally the old mantra, "buy gold to hedge inflation" is now starting to register, particularly after the last round of pain.
FYI one can buy gold through a few ETFs, if one is opposed to owning and storing the actual hard asset. I won't list them here, but there is one in particular that is tied directly to the commodity.
Gold is a situational hedge. You don't hold forever, but when fears rise, inflation is a real risk, among others, gold can be a nice counterweight to other forces.
Also, silver rarely appreciates the same as gold. It can, but the perception that, "Cheaper is better because more potential for higher returns!" Is a falsehood. Cheaper does not mean one can make more money. Quality is almost always expensive, particularly in something that has been around for a long, long time.

Never forget that gold and silver are used in production. That always has value.
About in a collapse gold having no value, that goes against thousands of years of history.

You are correct OG, gold and silver are used in production, especially electronics but if there is total economic collapse there is no infrastructure to support that production. You are also correct in saying that gold has thousands of years of history, so I just don't know for sure so I do consider your opinion. You make some very good points.

The food & ammunition vs gold & silver accumulation for prepping are not mutually exclusive. They all have a role to play, depending on the scenario and point in the timeline. Generally speaking, the food and ammunition are more of a concern in the early stages, but further down the road some means of economic activity becomes necessary even for most preppers. Some might be able to cultivate / hunt enough food to have enough to use some for barter, but many will not. Using ammunition for barter should only be done with very trustworthy parties. Silver (for instance "junk" silver coins) have the potential to be useful for trading/purchasing smaller / lower value items. Gold is more likely to be useful for high value / large quantity items. Also important is what oldgrognard mentioned if a prep'd for event does not occur. Gold & silver are potentially good investments, and can be great hedges against economic turmoil. Besides, if the Werewolf apocalypse comes, you're going to be glad to have that silver and some reloading equipment!

I'm generally suspicious of the ways to own gold. In most cases that I've heard, the reality is a document that says you own gold to me, if you don't physically have the metal, or know where it is and can go see it, it's not much different from any other paper wealth in that it could just not appear when you might decide to need it. But that's me.

That’s why I have physical gold and silver. I have some paper silver as well.

Best protect that Gold well--and a safety deposit box may seem safe, but if the poo hits the fan, one can bet those bank vaults will be raided, quickly.
My grandfather used to store a bunch of the stuff, gold bars, silver, coins, etc., in a safe in his home--a big, thick one that seemed impenetrable... Only to wake up/come home(I forget which exactly) one morning and realize someone had broken in, cracked the safe, and stolen everything inside. All that he was left with here a few (I believe) morgan dollars, which were long ago minted coin dollar notes made of 90% silver, which had been dropped.
A fortune, gone.

Here is an article on gold value. https://www.realclearmarkets.com/ar...performed_stocks_since_2000_1141188.html“ The supply of Gold continues to be outpaced by demand. The global demand for gold in 2024 and so far in 2025 has reached new record highs, while new supply from sources has been unable to keep pace. This seems to indicate that unless one or more of the above factors are mitigated, the price of gold in the years to come will increase. ”

As long as our economy continues to survive and makes progress gold is a good investment. Maybe I should divest a little bit.

Actually gold and the broad market move opposite each other. This has been a bit of an unusual period where both are going up substantially side by side.

Indeed. Gold has often been a fear indicator, a place of safety when everything else looks grim.

After soaring to fresh records this week, gold prices suffered a spectacular fall on Tuesday — their biggest one-day drop since 2013.
The precious metal plunged 5.7 percent to around $4,109 an ounce as investors cashed in profits, the dollar strengthened, and safe-haven demand faded. Silver fell even harder, down 7.2 percent to under $47.50, while platinum also slipped. Gold had climbed more than 50 percent in 2025, driven by fears over inflation, geopolitics, and market turmoil. That surge was initially driven by big banks and hedge funds. It will go back up though, it always does.

Daily Mail is barely one step above the National Enquirer.
