As one can tell, I'm sick and darn tired of modern movies. Very refreshing to watch older films that lack the modern social justice nonsense. Stop preaching, start entertaining, that's what I'd like to hammer into current screenwriters and directors, like it would do them any good.

Never saw "Hell Night" but I did see "Commando" way back when on VHS. "Commando" is definitely one of Arnold's forgotten films since you never see it being referenced or quoted in pop culture. Coincidentally Arnold's next film "Raw Deal" is just as much of a forgotten film as "Commando" so Arnold had a losing two-fer there!

A good "modern western" show. Beautifully shot and mostly well acted. It does go a bit over the top at times with the situations particularly after the first couple seasons. Overall I'd say it's worth a watch.

I never saw it but there was a show called "Longmire" that was given the same label. I only knew about it because one of the main actors from "Battlestar Galactica" was also on the main cast for "Longmire".

I think it is excellent. It gets better through seasons and thje characters really evolve. Particularly Costner's character and the ex SEAL son. The opening ten minutes of Season 4 are breathtakingly good.

Give it a chance, I think Costner in general and liked him in Open Range - you will enjoy.

Gorgeous scenery too.

I saw a couple of movies last weekend:

1) "The Infiltrator" -- Not a bad undercover cop movie that was decent enough... but begged for a Scorsese touch to propel the film to higher levels. There was a point at the very end where the story was demanding a long, ten to twenty minute one take, no cut scene put to music and the film never delivered this. If it had... Oh boy. Alas, this did not ruin things because overall the story was interesting enough. I feel a stronger director and screenplay adapter was warranted, regardless, given how the material was based on real events and an agent's novel. *** out of **** stars.

2) "Dead Bullet" -- Independent film, especially the low budget ones, can be a gamble. This one, for example, is only rated a 5.3 on IMDB. Most folks would simply walk past and never give a picture like this a chance, what with all the tumbleweeds--only 163 people have bothered to rate this film. Yep, I bet nobody here has even seen it. To tell the truth, over the years I have found some really good gems in the low budget indie space. Sleepers in hiding, that sort of thing. This one was pretty good and I was pleasantly surprised. Decent story, decent acting, directing was good. I liked it. This slow-burn picture was not Coen Brothers "Blood Simple" caliber, but not a waste of ninety minutes, either. *** out of **** stars.

I have not seen or even heard of either "Dead Bullet" or "The Infiltrator". When it comes to really obscure movies I'm pretty sure my primary source for discovering them is by watching Mystery Science Theater 3000. smile

"Infiltrator" was apparently a medium-budget 2016 movie starring Bryan Cranston. I hadn't heard of it either.

Yeah I checked out the cast list and there are some well known actors in that movie. It doesn't surprise me when an independent film with a cast of total unknowns gets under my radar but when an independent film has some big name actors in it and it still gets under my radar then that does surprise me.

Have you read the novel? That makes a huge difference for most people when it comes to how they perceive the movie.

What was it about Villeneuve's adaptation that you didn't find so great?

Wonky pacing and a lot of it just felt flat to me.

The pacing is definitely a legitimate concern for those who have not read the novel. Let's face it, from an "action scene" perspective nothing really happens until the surprise attack on Arakeen.

As far as "falling flat" I think I know what you may be referring to. There are some scenes/sequences that were MUCH more interesting and compelling in the Lynch film than in the Villeneuve film. The immediate example which comes to mind is the "space folding" sequence when the Atreides leave Caladan for Dune. In the Lynch film there is an aura of mystery and awe (greatly aided by the brilliant music) as you see the spacing guild navigators plot the course. In the Villeneuve film that scene lasts like 5 seconds and all you see is a ship coming through what looks like some kind of gate. Big whoop.

Another scene involves the introduction of the Harkonnen and Giedi Prime. In the Lynch film we see Brad Dourif as Piter de Vries reciting the Sappho juice litany as he makes his way to see the Baron. The architecture and set design of Giedi Prime for me was also quite striking and foreboding.
The equivalent scene in the Villeneuve film was "OK" but that's it. There really was nothing in that scene that stuck to me.

"Dawn of the Planet of the Apes". #2 in the three movie series. A pleasant way to pass the time, but not outstanding. The plot followed after the first movie in the series. Really, the 3 movie set should be viewed as one long movie.

The story was good -- and, made a point about society and war. The filming was very good.

Had excellent "ape models" in the movie -- they looked real and alive and showed appropriate emotions with subtle facial features.

One of the best space movies I've ever seen - a lot of 'zero g' stuff - attempting to repair a crippled space station against the odds.

8th episode (of over 40) in Sherlock Holmes TV series (set in England 1880s, filmed in England 1980s).

In the first scene (a conversation between Holmes and Watson), this episode made a point about the series (that has been evident, if one pays attention).

The point: The series focuses on the "mental process" of solving crimes (both big and small). Its not about providing "life and death action" or a "super interesting stand-alone story line" (though those may co-exist with the "mental" in some episodes).

So far, so good.

I may check this out. I've never heard of this one before and the premise definitely interests me.
