Pawn Sacrifice. A dramatization set during the cold war detailing the life of Bobby Fisher, played by Toby Maguire, whose famous chess matches in the 1970s against Boris Spassky symbolized the national pride of both nations. The movie covered the story very well without sugar coating or merrily walking down memory lane. I felt it was a an honest effort to tell the story without over dramatizing. They used original footage from news broadcasts, interview shows, Wide World of Sports and edited combinations of today and past footage that added to the feeling of being in the 60-70s.

I remember the spectacle these matches caused. I remember the fervor in which they were covered by news broadcasts, newspapers, Wide World of Sports. The matches probably single-handedly inspired more people to start playing chess than any other phenomenon before. It seemed that every where you turned there was a item regarding the competitions. Sadly, Fisher's mental demons were never diagnosed. He was highly paranoid, maybe even schizophrenic. He was homeless for a period of time until he was exiled to live his last days in Iceland.

I enjoyed Pawn Sacrifice much more than I thought I would. If you grew up in that time period I think you'll get more enjoyment form the movie - especially if you remember these chess matches and how they gripped the U.S.A.

Heh, chess being featured on "Wide World of Sports". You won't see anything like that now. lol

Like you said, that chess rivalry was pretty much entirely fueled by the Cold War. In many ways the same thing happened with the space program. Once the USSR was gone and the Cold War over, general interest in the space program dwindled.

Bombers B-52 (1957)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0050204/

Formulaic by the number Military drama with the big nosed guy from the American Express cards TV commercials and a very 19 year young Natalie Wood.

The story line is predictable and recycled but there are some nice visuals of B-47 and B-52 that were brand shiny new at the time this film was made.

are the good ole SAC days!

Saw 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi on Monday, highly recommended, I wanted to go back and see it on Tues since my GF had a "girls night out".

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt4172430/?ref_=nv_sr_1

For a movie that had real no named character besides John Krasinski (Emily Blunts husband) from the office and David Costabile from Suits & Dig

In my family we all refer to him as the big nosed guy from the American Express cards TV commercials.

Every time my mother would see him on TV, she would call him big nose guy!

He was also in The Streets of San Francisco with that kid Michael Douglas.

He was also very good as General Omar Bradley in "Patton".

The Princess Diaries 1 & 2. I was forced to watch it with my girls, and it wasn't as hellish as it could have been. The sequel has a young pre-Kirk Chris Pine.

Ugh. I got drafted to watch one of those because my niece wanted me to watch it with her.

I did find it interesting how the fictional country portrayed in the film seemed to be heavily based on Monaco.

I am sure you have seen a lot worse movies Panzer and you probably made some good memories for your niece.

Star Wars episode IV.Even with the new effects I didn't think this stood up well today but then I realised it was 40 years old after all. I may have spent most of the movie gazing at Leia's breasts though...

If you watch Jaws backwards, it's a heart warming story about a shark that spits out so many people that they have to open a beach.

I'm sure all of us here know that Leia didn't wear a bra in Episode IV. smile

No she didn't. No panties either.

Lucas said there is no such thing as women's underwear in a galaxy far far away

But he did use masking tape to tape Carrie's breasts down so they wouldn't jiggle wiggle out of her Princess garment.

Go Tell the Spartans (1978)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0077617

Based on true events of 1964 in Muc Wa, if only the American Generals and Politicians learned from this at the time, the rest of the Vietnam War would may had turned out differently.

Most recent for me was "A Gunfight" with Johnny Cash and Kirk Douglas.
Not great but not terrible either. The IMDb rating of 6.4 is probably about right.

The Road Home - a love story featuring a young Zhang Ziyi. I believe it was her first international film. B+
