I see this is on Steam. Does that mean that any version I buy is steam associated? That I assume would alter any opportunity to mod the game in future and have multiple installs. Any advice would be appreciated as to get a downloaded version or hold out for a DVD version ( if they arnt steam. ) bearing in mind in New Zealand I cant find anywhere to buy a copy. No one seems to be gearing up to sell it.

No official word yet. Your best bet would be to order a DVD. Oleg Maddox did comment already (on his youtube account of all places) that even single player would require Steam, but truth be told we don't know for sure. Steam games work with mods fine, and you can backup/restore multiple versions. If you want to access Multiplayer then you will need Steam it seems. EBGames is the official distributor for the Aussies DVD - which I know you're not, but latitude willing etc. Ubi info here: http://forums.ubi.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/8071032709/m/1751069519

From the Justflight site:
"NB: IL-2 Sturmovik: Cliffs of Dover can be played offline, but an Internet connection and Steam account are required for multi-player connection and game updates. IL-2 Cliffs of Dover uses a different activation system to Just Flight products and you will be supplied with a unique keycode to activate the product. This keycode will also be stored in your Just Flight account."
"...and game updates." Meaning manual patches will never be available, not even for the boxed version? More likely that this is yet more evidence of the chaotic misinformation perpetuated by Ubiscam's incredible incompetance over the release of this game.

Thanks. Putting that information out the first few days (and not posting incorrect information on the official blog site) would have spared quite some outrage. The information policy on this title is really, really bad. She could have answered Franky's forum posting regards to Steam, but didn't for two weeks at which time it had dropped off.

I get the impression that she's been waiting on the information herself rather than holding it back.

One doesn't need Steam (unless one is using the Steam version, of course).
Only some Steam components/services are used for multi-player and it is possible to by-pass these if you want (eg. using hyperlobby).

If you have a dvd, then it will just add your game to your Steam's library. Why would you need Hyper Lobby when there is a good chance the game already has a built in server browser?

Err.. guys? It says: "Just like last year's release "Avatar", "Cliffs of Dover" will use a driver-less activation-system by Solidshield (...) Furthermore, a Steam account will be needed to play."
System: Asus P5Q-E - Intel Core 2 Quad Q9300@ 2.5 GHz (currently @3.0 GHz) - Gigabyte GF GTX460 1GB OC - 2x2 GB OCZ DDR2-RAM - Samsung P2370 23'' - MS Sidewinder 2 FF (red trigger, baby!) - Saitek Pro Flight Rudder Pedals - TrackIR 5 + Pro-Clip - Windows Vista 64 Home Premium

"Steam account required to play" is exactly the kind of inprecise formulation that got them into this mess to begin with. I can read German obviously, and your quote sounds to me like he's just reading it off the same marketing paper. I would trust the forum "spokes person" more.
Dano, you're a right it may well not be her fault for the delay, but damn, that still means they have no information management internal that works half decent if it takes two weeks for the basic things to filter trough.

Again, from the Ubi post linked above: @ ALL
In short..
ONE online activation on install NO this does not go through steam unless you bought the game via steam in which case I cannot confirm, but assuming if you bought from steam this doesnt bother you
If playing single player ONLY (and did not buy via steam) you will NOT need steam
Hope that clears things up Why would we want Hyper_Lobby? Gee, I don't know...No annoying advert pop-up? No Steam spyware? Great running, low resource MP portal?

And now we've been told that retail versions cannot be activated on steam, in which case how the 'eff will they all work together? 'Activates' in Steam means you can add the serial code and then it's the same as if bought there. It looks like the disk version will not allow this (confirmed on the Ubisoft forum) I guess they will work together ok in terms of multiplayer in that you either use the in-game browser (which will require a steam login) or run a HyperLobby app and matchmake through sharing IP's of the server you want to meet on. Best guess is that you'll be able to start CoD from the command line as a client using a servers IP address. Edit: One interesting potential 'fracturing' of the MP will be that VAC anti-cheat servers will be via steam accounts only. It's an interesting venn diagram intersection of those with voices in their head regarding a CIA mind-control PC download store will be the ones who have to play on servers where the client files can be altered. Delicious

The same people that swear by Hyper Lobby are those that still use Yahoo Messenger or ICQ.

Fozzy, we must let these guys do their thing. I've pulled away from this discussion, as I was getting all sorts of hate-mail from the regulars, calling me a schill and much worse.
Remember when Dylan went electric? Goddamn, the same crowd of hateful bastards came out. The same, you wonder? Well, maybe not the same guys, but it's exactly the same mind-set.
We'll buy it, we'll play it, and we'll hope to all that's hopeful that it's as good as IL-2. Chances are that it's going to be a worthy successor, but we'll not know until we get it. But some of us think that Oleg's previous work had some merit, and still others are prepared to support this niche industry regardless. Some are not. In which case, I must ask, what are they here? There are posters they expend a lot of energy downing this game. I cannot understand their motivation.

Wow, that was 1965. I was two. How old are you to remember that?

You can say that again.
