It used to be that when preparing to lock onto a ground target you had full view of the targets in the MFD. This is still implemented in AF. ex: It used to be that when you locked onto a ground target you "still" had full view of the "other" targets in the MFD. This is not implementeded in AF. Instead, the MFD goes black and the triangle is only visible. ex: Until you unlock again. ex: Will this be corrected as in previous versions of Falcon. Is this realistic GM/GMT/SEA radar operation? It was sure helpfull to be able to continue and see the remaining targets after locking onto the front of a column and use the crosshairs to align onto a straight heading for the column.

It is realistic. When you lock on to a target, the air-to-ground radar goes in to a single target track mode, which allows it to keep a lock for calculating a bombing triangle. Such is the disadvantage of locking targets.

Thanks GPF.
Ratchet up the "isolated" target selection difficulty a notch. It's now a get it right the first time only option if bombing from a specific heading in a crowded enviroment from a scrutinized recon.
I like difficulty.

GPF, let's go back here for a moment if we can.
I understand your point that the STT is "focused" on the selected target for bombing computations but why would this "have" to deny just the visibility of the remaining targets?

I don't think the ground map radar has any sort of memory to store where targets are. It's just a simple radar. It scans, and it shows its findings on the MFD. In fact, it probably has no clue where a target is in the world. It only knows where it is in relation to your jet. So as your jet moves, the radar has to continue scanning in order to keep giving you an up-to-date picture of what's out there. To make matters worse, an entire scan takes a couple seconds. For bombing, you need constant, instantaneous updates of the bombing triangle to be accurate. Thus, the radar has to focus on one target to the exclusion of everything else.
Remember that this is 1970s radar technology. More modern aircraft such as the F-22 supposedly are able to remember where fixed ground targets are, and even deliver ordinance to them without a radar lock.

You may use "MARK" procedure to register target position like a steerpoint position. Sorry for my poor english !

I can see what your describing GPF It makes 70's ish sense that the scanning stops in able to focus on the selected target and is no longer able to scan & present imagery at the same time. So, with that in mind, F4, SP4, BMS all had it wrong with the continued displaying of targets surrounding the designated one and AF is now correct? Or is the reverse true? papyvolant
You may use "MARK" procedure to register target position like a steerpoint position. You could do that in a general target area sort of way. But what I'm talking about is disecting that general area of individualy displayed targets after locking onto a target in case you realize you've made the wrong individual target choise and need to reposition the focus of your wrath.

Umm... Well, I have no inside knowledge of how the AN/APG-68 radar works. But, from a sim player's point of view, it appears that Allied Force has it right. You get the same effect when you use the M61 Vulcan in air-to-ground mode. The radar no longer scans because it's pointed down the gunsight calculating an aiming solution for the pipper in the HUD.
So with that in mind, finding and hitting individual targets in A-G mode with the radar is really tough. You can use DBS1 or DBS2 modes to look closer, and with careful adjustment of the radar gain you might be able to pick something out from the clutter. Or, you might not. That's why SAM sights hide in between trees and buildings. When you absolutely must hit a specific target, HARMs, Mavericks, or LGBs are the way to go.

Can someone from LP comment on this A/G radar operation please.

how does the real viper work?
What WW2 Fighter pilots say about Angels and Airspeed:
"Nice job of getting down to the basics - love your choice of a cover!" Col. Clarence 'Bud' Anderson
"I have enjoyed reading angels and airspeed, it should prove good reading for all interested in combat tactics and their application related to the fluid air environment and state of technology in WWII years. All the best as you make it available." - Col. Charles McGee - Tuskegee Airman

You just gave me a thought, why doesn't the viper use the TFR for that? sorting out "how far away is the ground from the nose axis" is it's main job...

why do something the hard way when there is an easy way?

I'm guessing it's that way for the same reason, Bard. The radar is shooting at the point represented by the CCIP pipper, calculating an instanteous bombing triangle. It can't scan while it's focused on a single point.
I really wish someone from LP would jump in on this one, because now I'm talking out my afterburner nozzle.

A-G radar doesn't stop working in CCIP...it just goes into a different mode (A-G ranging mode) with a 10nm range scale where the radar is pointed at the CCIP pipper used to calculate range/elevation.
If someone comes up with information that demonstrates LP has something wrong, I'm sure they'd be interested, but come on...asking them to comment everytime someone wants to know how something is supposed to work in a real jet is a waste of time.

The very first post demonstrates that LP has it "Different" than any previous flavor of F4. Wrong or not is what was trying to be understood. The "how it works in RL" queston has developed from the first and was never the original question. *applaudes LP* if we ever get an answer.

if we ever get an answer. The very first post demonstrates nothing, and AF is NOT different from every other flavour of Falcon in this regard. Try SP4.2, SP4/BMS, FF3/Cobra...they all do the same thing. What do you mean by 'wrong or not' if not by how it 'really' works? Your first post asked this: "Will this be corrected as in previous versions of Falcon. Is this realistic GM/GMT/SEA radar operation?" If this isn't asking how something works IRL, I don't know what is. What kind of answer are you looking for?
