Worm, you can undo your direct order so he'll go back to his routine schedule- if you hit tab and bring up your crew menu, there should be a button to "Stop Direct Orders". It might take a bit of time as they start dithering a bit, but eventually they'll get back into their assigned stuff. There is also the little anchor symbol on their 'card' you can clic. Hope that helps.
