Planes are slowing down to conserve fuel as well as truckers. Indirectly, that means saving money too, but the big picture here is oil conservation. The estimate is that forcing a speed of 55mph would conserve about 4% of oil consumption per year. When we do the little things, 4% here, 2% here, 5% here, etc... we quickly see how we can reduce oil consumption by maybe 15-20%.

In addition, for those who feel the need to disregard the 55mph speed limit law by say 25+ mph, then an added $50 fine to the ticket would help promote the new law. That $50 fine would go directly to help fund research into alternative fuel choices.

Less oil consumption also has a nice benefit - less demand. Less demand then equates into higher supply, which ultimately leads to lower price.
