Thanks for sharing! Never saw a Lightning in flight but it was an experience in itself just standing next to the beast at the RAF Museum, Hendon, in 2019.
I wonder if they put a bit of negative G on the aircraft before releasing the drop tanks? Or did they just not release them?

They were just ferry tanks I believe, dunno if there was a drill for getting rid of them in flight.

There is an apocryphal story that attempting to jettison full tanks would result in them staying where they were and it was the wings that were jettisoned.
Great looking airplane. The accidental flight story was interesting as was the tactic of zooming up to 60,000 feet to get up there with the Russian bombers.
The Lightning overwing tanks could be jettisoned in flight - the pylons were fitted with explosive release units.

one of my earliest memories is watching Lightnings taking off from RAF Leuchars whilst on holiday in Fife. It's always remained a favourite & luckily pretty much every aviation museum in the UK of any note seems to have one (& a Canberrra, & a Hunter & ...)
