So I bought Starfield. Caught by the hype? Probably. It has not been my type of game really, but DBond and Panzermeyers discussions in the Fallout/Fallout 76 thread have drawn my interest towards the genre.Well , I think it is in the same genre, (even if it is in space.) And I find it interesting and fun. I opened Steam this morning and found out the game was ready to play. I thought I had to wait to Sept. 6., but since I have bought the premium edition I can start today. I have only started . Gone through the tutorial quest and on my way to the adventures ahead. Last night after watching the news I did my usual browsing on Youtube. I found reviews and walkthroughs of the game. I started to watch. After a couple of minutes I decided to stop. I thought that if I continued watching the video, I would spoil the immersion the game seems to have. For me that was the right decicion. Going through the start of the game will obviously affect how you will experience the game. Looking at someone else going through the beginning will probably influence your choices, and I found out I would try to do the choices without having to think about them for days. There is always a chance to start a new game if you so like. Anyone else playing this?

Soon. Most likely within the next month. Still busy with other games.

I was initially drawn in. I was looking for something to do in space after losing interest in Elite: Dangerous. However, I understand that Starfield isn't a 'space sim' but more a game set in space.
I'd like to hear what people think of it though and I await the reviews with interest.

By default Starfield does not support 32:9, however there is a hack. I won't be able to play until I get back across the country again, which may be a while.

I was going to start it today -- and then turn it off -- and continue Witcher 3.
But, I decided that might mess up my enjoyment of Witcher 3.

Pretty sure I am going to buy it even if it is not exactly the game I had hoped for. My main question is: can you free-roam around space or is everything done by fast travel? I would like the spaceship to be my home base, traveling between solar systems and e.g. pick up a distress call, divert and start a new questline. Is this possible? The video reviews I watched always seem to dwell on the planets but skip the space flight parts.

Bought the standard edition, so I'll be waiting till the 6th... looking forward to it! at least you will be patched.. in this days of eletronic sharing, i call this #%&*$#. if you have an item fixed it should be implemented into the original code instead of downloading a game on release and then downloading a fix. woe is me if you bought a phisical media, download version should not be stuck to gold version.

Got the game yesterday but spent most of the time cursing the controls and I find the key rebinding UI rather finicky. Unless I am missing something you cannot bind key combos and there seems to be no joystick support Hope to get this sorted today so I can start enjoying the game, because it looks like it could be good.

I hear Starfield is missing quite a bit of things, yet the potential is there for modders to implement the multitudes of missing features. I have been told even reviews of 7/10 are generous at best.
Bethesda games age over time, like wine.
Morrowind was absolutely incredible in 2014 when I played through using hundreds of mods--the Morrowind Overhaul 3.0.
Skyrim has been incredible so far, 12 years after it was released, using close to 400 mods. It was a mere shadow of a game on release.
So we may have to wait for this one to develop the flavor and texture we desire.

I hear Starfield is missing quite a bit of things, . In my book there is absolutely ZERO excuse for this when you consider the massive amount of staff and resources that Bethesda has. Reading this actually makes me angry. I won't bother getting this for at least 3-4 months. Hopefully by then it will be patched up. And I'm sorry but if people have to install a bunch of mods in order to make a game really good then there's a fundamental problem there.

I have now the habit of not buying a game new (Arma and ww2 flight sims have been the exception) due to how devs tend to release unfinished games. Two years later they're generally cheaper and playable.

due to how devs tend to release unfinished games. I mean, I understand why this happens so often. The publisher pressures the developer to release the game NOW and then worry about patching it later. That way the publisher stops paying the costs for development sooner and they start getting revenue sooner. It's a crappy business practice either way.

I also have a couple of early access/first day purchases, like ArmA, Elder Scrolls, MSFS, with all others being watched with suspicion Starfield doesn't appeal to me much, I love that gameplay in an Elder Scrolls environment, but not so much in Fallout or Starfield. Can't really say why.

I played other Bethesda games before so I expect the usual quirkiness with characters and quests. Haven't run into any technical issues. But I don't remember having this trouble with the menus and controls in Skyrim or Fallout, like having to hold down a key rather than simply pressing it to exit a menu or even different keys for different menus. Looks like they meant to design it this way, so wouldn't hold my breath for them to patch that.

Starfield doesn't appeal to me much, I love that gameplay in an Elder Scrolls environment, but not so much in Fallout or Starfield. Can't really say why. I think I know what you are talking about and it's all about the type of genre that the game is set in. In my case, I really enjoyed RPG's like Elden Ring and Mass Effect because of the genre they are set in (Dark Fantasy and Science Fiction respectively) but I have zero interest in playing Red Dead Redemption even though the gameplay is very similar but I just have zero interest in the Old West genre/setting for a PC game.

I found red dead very different (and much better) from mass effect 1(didn't play elden, and didn't play later MEs), gameplay wise. red dead characters don't have a broomstick planted where the sun doesn't shine, too.
But indeed when the environment doesn't appeal, it's hard to enjoy the gameplay. Not sure I'd enjoy red dead in middle ages, for example.

While it looks like an alright game, it sucks that it came at the expense of a timely Fallout or Elder Scrolls sequel.
