I found red dead very different (and much better) from mass effect 1(didn't play elden, and didn't play later MEs), gameplay wise. red dead characters don't have a broomstick planted where the sun doesn't shine, too.
But indeed when the environment doesn't appeal, it's hard to enjoy the gameplay. Not sure I'd enjoy red dead in middle ages, for example.
