I agree with you RK.

But I'm sure everyone will have their own opinion.
I think Apple is not going to develop the key, because they can sell millions of phones, that are secure.
And sell them to people who need that level of security.

Greed is a very common, human, characteristic.

Just my opinion......everyone has one.

I just hope we, here, don't have to 'argue' about it. smile

A supercomputer (or good gamer laptop) can brute force walking through every possible combination in a given period of time.
What Apple does is if the a "hacker" attempts to crack the security key it wipes the phone after a given number of attempts.
The Government wants Apple to disable that feature while they brute force the phone confiscated from that creep.

I don't think current tech can realistically brute force AES 128bit

As I understand the situation, the judge/government wants Apple to develop an alternate version of the phone's IOS operating system, that removes the safeguards against a brute force attempt to find the pass code to log on to the phone, and to allow the brute force attempt to be executed via a hard wired connection instead of punching the attempts in on the phone's screen.

I'm an Android user, not an IOS user, but what puzzles me is how that is supposed to work. How does the government expect to install an alternate operating system version on to a phone that they can not log on to in the first place?

My Android devices do not install operating system updates unless I am logged on and authorize the update. Does IOS install OS updates automatically without user authorization required?

No one here has pointed out Apple's objection, which is
if we do this for you, we can be forced to provide it for
any other jurisdiction in the world, under threat of our
local representatives there being thrown in jail or worse.

IIRC Apple had an issue with the U.S. NSA or whatever security institution because they wittingly distributed an OS (macs and iphones) with an encryption that even the NSA may have a hard time decrypting. I think I read something about this years ago.

Yes, for some reason this is coming to my mind also... I was/am under the impression that laws are in place to require backdoor access for commercial encryption products. Could be wrong.

Correcting myself above... My memory was of a few years back, some legislators *proposing* government backdoor access to commercial encryption systems. Based on my bit of reading this morning, apparently the Apple situation has renewed these efforts.
