And before you start pointing out flaws in wt, keep in mind that it doesn't have the same problems with ground objects and AI as bos.

If you want to make a ww2 combat flight sim, then it is pretty important to model the ground war, especially on the eastern front.

I wasn't going to consider WT a "sim".

The prerequisite for a game to be considered a "flight sim" is the cockpit view. Since the goal is to "simulate" flying an aircraft. Therefore 3rd person flying games can't qualify as "sims". War Thunder only has cockpits modeled for some of the planes. I don't think any of the bombers have 3D cockpits, only the "virtual" one.
Therefore WT fails to fully meet the criteria for being a flight sim.

Just like we don't consider you either a genuine flight sim fan nor a spokesperson for 1C.

Sort of, something inbetween.

Indeed it seems people are trying to redefine the meaning of flight simulation with what I'd call combat flight game criteria

Since nobody made one of these games for 8 years, who's to say what those criteria are exactly? You're assuming the standards set by another game nearly 10 years ago is still relevant.

They're only relevant when the developer led customers to believe they were.

I don't recall the pre-Early Access dev diary which claimed they were out to beat War Thunder. I do seem to recall comments about continuing the name of the Il-2 franchise in its spirit. That seems to imply carrying on closely to what had come before.

To say that the goal posts were all moved and that was to be expected is not supported by those statements.

This article is about flight simulation in general, but focuses mainly on professional devices. For lower-end, non-professional or recreational simulators, see Amateur flight simulation. For the Microsoft product, see Microsoft Flight Simulator. For all other uses, see Flight simulator (disambiguation).

Flight simulator

A flight simulator is a device that artificially re-creates aircraft flight and the environment in which it flies, for pilot training, design, or other purposes. It includes replicating the equations that govern how aircraft fly, how they react to applications of flight controls, the effects of other aircraft systems, and how the aircraft reacts to external factors such as air density, turbulence, wind shear, cloud, precipitation, etc. Flight simulation is used for a variety of reasons, including flight training (mainly of pilots), the design and development of the aircraft itself, and research into aircraft characteristics and control

Just wondering why you seem to care about it so much then.

For the player that environment includes a first person view and a cockpit.

I never read a clause in the refund that denied me the right to an opinion.

That's my definition and I'm sticking with it. It's hard to refer to something as a flight simulator that doesn't have a cockpit.
It's a clear enough distinction between "flying game" and "flight simulator".

Hey that's cool, I was just pointing out indeed that was your definition, not the definition.

So then regarding War Thunder, I guess in your mind when flying the planes with a cockpit, one is flying a simulator, and when flying in planes sans cockpit, one is flying a game?

Personally, I view them all as combat flight games. But that is just me.

I'm so glad Sharpe joined SimHQ to explain flight Sims to us. And its interesting that his explanation always fits Loft's view (a guy who has become the bane of the flight Sim community).

Correct. A game can be a flight sim and still be used as a "game". DCS A-10C is a sim. But you can play it in "game mode" at which point it's not really a sim.
The cockpit view is only a prerequisite. There are other more subjective criteria like the one mentioned above. If 90% of the players use the game as a "game" is it even then really a sim if that's how it's used? Is a screwdriver still a screwdriver if you pound nails with it?

The next criteria is controllers. A "flight sim" assumes or favors the idea that the player uses realistic controllers. Stick pedals throttle. It's not mandatory but that should be the most favorable control setup. If it's more effective in the game to use a mouse and keyboard it's not meeting that criteria.

War Thunder fails at all the above as well.

Ok what's your definition?

Blazing Angels on the XBox is not a "flight sim". It's a flying game.

Microsoft FSX is a "flight simulator" game.

What's the difference? Discuss...
