This comment alone is enough to demonstrate that either:

1. You don't know the slightest thing about games development
2. You like to talk in superlatives and take the most extreme position just to get a reaction
3. Both of the above

I'm sure it doesn't matter much to you, but your opinions and perspectives have significantly more weight and value if they appear to be objective and grounded in some sort of reality.

The moment you start talking in extremist absolutes, it just becomes annoying noise with no practical value.

As grossly disappointed as I am in BoS, I'll totally take that bet. This isn't going to kill them and they'll still be fully functional in 12 months time.

Let's assume any modders would suffer under the same lack of access to the source code. Then explain how you think they'd be able to fix the sound-bubble problem (hard-coded third-party sound-engine), the cannon-round flash being rendered tens of feet behind its impact-point, the total absence of complex systems to be damaged in the a/c models, the hard-coded FMs, based upon some sort of mathematical formulae. Superlatives? Extremist absolutes? I think not. You can't take a Trabant and turn it into a Porsche.

Access to the source code is something different. I assumed when you said that "no amount of love from Team Fusion could fix BoS" that you were saying that it was a fundamentally unsalvageable train wreck. My point was that that's clearly not the case. There's a lot of good stuff in BoS that a determined team could absolutely drive into a good place.

See above.

I think there's no reason at all that BoS couldn't evolve from its current state into something really excellent. A lot of people (myself included) enjoy the actual flying, the combat and the visuals in BoS - we're just looking for a compelling wrapper. Your position, on the other hand, seems to be that it's only viable as a sim if everything is modeled to a DCS level of fidelity. As much as I love the DCS series (it's very much my sim of choice), it's not the only route to success or the only way of having an enjoyable flight sim experience.

That may be a critical deciding factor for you, and that's fine, but it doesn't make sense to use that as the basis of your conclusion that the whole endeavour is a train wreck that will be forgotten about in 6 months and bring about the demise of the company. That's a very extremist position that assumes that everyone judges flight sims by the same criteria that you do, which is not a very defensible position.

Additionally, it appears from the outside that you're excited/happy about the idea of companies, projects and people disappearing without trace because you feel let down by RoF, BoS, CloD and so on. That, to me, seems like a very extremist position to take when we're just talking about the merits of a video game.

My point is just that engaging in personal attacks, wishing people ill and completely writing off a game that is in many ways actually pretty good doesn't make it seem like you're coming from a place of intelligent, considered and rational discourse.

For BoS to become a viable squad MP sim the LW FMs would have to be fixed. It's become pretty clear the devs like them just the way they are, for obvious reasons in my opinion, and I don't believe they'll be accessible to modders.
Likewise the DMs. Hit-box DMs...just LOL. Cannon-round impact flashes tens of feet behind the planes. Insta-smoke on just about any hit in a wing that doesn't chop it off. Beyond pathetic for a sim, perfectly fine for an arcade blaster though. No system complexity or depth, nothing for modders to get hold of and fix.
No hit-sounds, due to the 3rd-party sound engine being unfit for purpose. Do you think modders would be able to hack into that code and fix it? Without being chopped off at the kness by 1C/777?

The game is, for those reasons, un-salvageable by modders in my opinion. And I'd say it's a reasonably rational opinion.

One other factor that the future of BOS is dependent on, and I'd say it's probably dependency #1, is future sales. The comment was that any future content was only coming according to sales of the original issue. This is sort of like saying the future of BOS is tied to a stock market like strategy. If we sell, sell, sell, then we'll expand, expand, expand. But if we don't sell, sell, sell,...

The stock markets a gamble. Anything built on it's premise is a gamble as well. I'm not wishing those who like the arcade that is BOS any ill will, I hope for their sakes they'll see all the content they hope for.

But don't confuse a realist with a pessimist. 200,000 copies represent a lot of different tastes. It would be better for any company who want to continue to sell flight sim/games to allow modders in from the get go. At least then the many tastes could be satisfied. But restricting the diet to one menu isn't going to do the product much good.

I'm selling my copy at some point, so I don't really have a dog in this race. I like sims, I don't like arcade games, with maybe content to follow, like a Mission Builder.

Dear WernerVoss,

We have all heard your opinions. While a lot of them has merit, you only listen at half of what other posters have to say and keep on hammering on about things that are not relevant to this sim. This was never going to be the "most realistic online squad sim" if you read the dev blogs. It is however a lot of things and the big plus is that the current developer (forget about modders for now) acknowledges that things are wrong and they have indicated that they will be spending effort in the next 6 to 12 months to fix some of them. This developer also asked for suggestions and contributions.

Now instead of venting yourself out here, please consider compiling a list of the most serious issues and submitting them to the developer instead. That way your concerns are heard by someone that cares and can actually make a difference.

I don't believe you are wrong, but your posts are sweeping/immature/tiring and your energy can be spent in a more constructive way. Please make that list and send it to the developer. If you don't want to then fine, but please stop posting about it here.

I'm quite sure any list I might send to the developers would be trumped by their exclusive access to hitherto unknown sources of data. Like the ones that have the LaGG3 out-rolling the Fw190. For just one example amongst many. I think I'll not waste my time. As if any such fidelity could be expected of an arcade game anyway. Or is it the lack of fidelity that makes it an arcade game? A bit chicken and egg I guess.

And we've heard that kind of "6 to 12 months" tosh before, with RoF. We're still waiting for the FM revisions that were promised for it years ago. And we'll be flogging the same dead horse with BoS years from now. Well, we would if its corpse hadn't been dragged to the knacker's yard and boiled for glue.

And that's what all this hullabaloo is about now; a corpse. Yet to be still-born but that's as inevitable as death and taxes. Do you not read the multitude of forums and the posts of the huge majority that have already condemned this game? None of which would have happened if it hadn't been touted as a sim from the outset. If we'd been clearly told what it was really going to be it would have garnered the same kind of attention as Birds of Prey...a quaint arcade blaster that nobody need take particularly seriously or care much about.

There's a Monty Python's sketch about a dead parrot that's quite apropos. Check it out on youtube.

I'm just curious as to how many future sales they can realistically expect. I know a few people who have held off buying into the Early Access, but I feel like the majority of the core audience has probably already bought into the game.

They'll probably get a boost during a Steam sale, but at 50-75% off the normal price. Personally I don't have a lot of confidence in "future sales".

I refuse to buy a flight sim that I have no interest in playing, on the off chance that MAYBE someday they'll make the one I really want to play.

^ My concern would be potential add ons; will the power ups be campaign restrictive like the current ones are? I don't see many sim purists buying into that for a second time.

That is what they planned all along. Online only access was only for the Early Access (beta!!!!) period.
