Depends on the server's realism settings. You might have to do things like turn fuel cocks, switch on magnetos, as pressing 'I' won't work on that server.
The windowing system for chat and others is an acquired taste. If you get lots of windows up and overlaying then press ALT and right mouse click onto the grey area and pick 'close window'.
I've personally found it best just to close all the default windows and start again, i.e. if you right click you can 'Create New' and then just populate it with what you want (including a chat window you just click into to chat with a smaller font etc). The windows once the top bar is highlighted blue can also be dragged around and resized.
The banana forum (1C) have a sticky called 'Less Annoying Text' if you really want to get into it.
