Just wondering about this. Other than a direct hit, or very close adjacent one, what other damage could a 500# bomb do a tank? For the sake of argument a medium WWII tank, like the German Panther. At what range would it be considered lethal for the tank, and why?
Let's say it's 100 meters. Bomb impacts, what happens to the tank? Is it destroyed, damaged, undamaged? If damaged, is the damage caused by concussion/blast effects? I can't imagine once you get to a certain distance, the shrapnel would puncture a tanks armor. But I have no idea what that distance is.

I should have made that clear. I mean physical damage to the tank and injury/death to the crew.

IMO it would require a very closeby hit to disable the tank, and a direct hit to kill the crew and destroy the tank, an uncontained HE blast just isn't an efficient way of doing business against heavy armor.
However the bomb fragments could damage antennae, sights, vision blocks, stowed equipment etc from a decent distance.
In Desert Storm, B-52's full of dumb bombs were used against massed dug in Iraqi armor, but that wasn't nearly as effective as hoped, so "tank plinking" with LGBs was adopted.

After the bombings for "Operation Cobra" several German tanks had been flipped upside down. I think that would be good enough to take them out of action.

The rear and underside of the Tank is where it's most vulnerable, I have read somewhere where they tried to skip the bomb in under the Tank if they could or hit it in the rear end, of course HVARS might work but again from the rear.
