Hard to compare visual quality right now... Storm of War is still so early on in that department. We're seeing some neat technical stuff that Oleg has been careful to point out time and time again. Inevitably you can make the comparisons... but very hard to draw any real conclusions. What we've seen so far is not really optimized yet while BoP is making use of the top level DX9 shaders and the like. Storm of War should look as good if not better and come with a mission builder and more authentic materials historically.

funny in that video, it looks as if the 109 has highly polished surfaces on each "white part"... now that's realistic... make a camo paint and then, pis some flashy point that will be visible from miles away... however, the explosion on the ground is nice

Well one thing I really don't like is the sound of the aircraft. They both sound like 4 cylinder suitcase engines. Like a little Lycombing or Franklin out of a Piper J3 or Stinson. Plus I'm pretty sure that this won't be able to compete with SOW. Not with the History fanatics and the people who have to have every detail just so. The book "In Pursuit" has a name for us but I can't remember it right now. I'll have to look it up.

Here it is..Quote for the book "In Pursuit" Talking about the types of people who fly sims.
"Regardless of origin pilots can be said to fall into either of two main categories: the casual and the hard-core. This is not indisputable so, to the contrary: depending on your mood, you might be hard-core in one session and casual in another. Still, for the sake of argument, pilots are usually gear either toward a behavior which is predicated by historic aspects or toward or toward one that is entirely centred on the fighting experience. I will call them Type A Grognards and Type B Funseekers. The Grognard has a deep interest in the era and has probably spent half a life time reading up on history and particulars of WWII. He knows the difference between MG-FF and MG-121, he can recite orders of battle from obscure engagements over the Owen Stanelys and he knows perfectly well what discerning traits one or the other machine has at varying speeds."
On and on it goes and it's quite funny. The Grognards are going to stick with "Storm Of War Battle Of Britain" I'm sure of it!

Yes the engine sounds could do with some changes, but just look at the graphics.. just miles ahead of anything that is available at this moment. If this thing gets into the hands of the modders it could turn out to be superb. As stated, I'll be getting both titles anyway, but despite what Oleg has stated, I've not seen any proof yet that SoW will be visualy better, until I do I'm reserving judgement. By the way.. did you see the white cliffs and Dover harbour on that last clip at the end.. If Oleg can't equal that he will have some explaining to do..lol!

WOP is alot more than an "arcadie junky thing". This game has alot of potential, with a large development crew, who could if motivated make this a classic combat flight sim for even the more hardcore.
+ good terrain graphics + very very fast load times + no pop-ups in the terrain + the code is highly optimised + engine management + decent FM and DM + decent aircraft and cockpits + working gauges

WoP is more of an action/arcade game then a pc flight sim. Also, compairing a released product with one still almost a year (i hope) from its launch it's rather dumb and surely feckless.
In all fairness, while the terrain looks great in these shots, the color palette has nothing to do with reality but is trying to give a retro feeling with the sepia tones. Now that would be a cheap trick met with revolted shouts if not straight out mutiny by the sim crowd, but for the casual gamers which are its target market it's just another design decision.
And the cockpits are really crude. The lastest Il2 (the game) cockpits (like the Il-10) are better, not to mention the superb cockpits from the mods (like Avala's cockpits).
Hats down for the great job they did on WoP terrain graphics with the modification of the Il-2 engine. However, surely Oleg knew what he could have squeezed from the old engine and yet he chose to build a new one. Now you have to believe the man an idiot if you think the new engine will look worse then the modified old one.

Am i the only one relizing that WoP uses a cartload of "cheats" to make the graphics look better than they really are?
To name a few:
View distances of a few miles at max, thats why the haze is there no matter what weather conditions.
Citiez look good from a far but look close up and everything looks very blury.
The general use of vivid colors to hide "simplar" graphics
Dont get me wrong, it looks very nice and ill proppably give it a go, but to say WoP could/will beat SoW, com on, the 2 isnt even on the same page.
How the OP can grade the WoP pit in the first post higher than the SoW pit is beyond me. As mentioned before, all SoW screenshots are lowest quality vip vs WoP highest quality so the comparison is allredy faulty ans still the SoW spit cockpit nocks the socks of anything WoP has.
Like i said, will proppably give WoP a go never the less and i dont undesrstand peoples need to compare. Why not let WoP be WoP on its own instead of degrading its qualities by comparing it with a sim wich will outclass it in every way imagineble (Graphics, Dynamic lighting, Dynamic weather, DM, FM, QMB, FMB etc. etc.)
I mean, honestly, to ask Gaijin to outperform SoW with what they have is asking them to be freeging magicians, not game developers.
Take it for what it is, a new WWII flight game, the bridge between IL2 1946 and SoW, and be happy.

because vaporware is better than what you can actualy play and see.

They already outperformed in number of planes , battlefields. I turn the question other way around. Let us see Oleg outperfom WoP because we can play wop now.
All i get is speculations and "what ifs" BoB is and will be. But the facts are here in the form of screenshots. And WoP simply IS better. I don't care what quality BoBs pics are. Oleg made his decision to post them like this. I'm not holding my breath for another year to find out in the end that it was the high quality.
I see Olegs fanboys are showing up.

and does that make you WOP fanboy?
Is BOB SOW vapourware...not likely...could it become vapourware...maybe but doubtful.
Could WOP surpass SOW...possibly but unlikely.

I'm playing sturmovik since 2001 and i don't even own WoP yet - oh yes i'm such a big fanboy of WoP. I'm basing on the facts that i see. Not some to-be-come speculations. "Could WOP surpass SOW...possibly but unlikely. " Will you play SOW in the next 5-10 months ? Doubtfull Can you play WoP in the next week? Yes The question should be , "Could SOW surpass WoP .... lets wait and see"

From what I understand, it is not the same engine.

Wether or not I'm able to play SOW in the next months has no relation to wether or not SOW will be more detailed than WOP.
First off the developer has a history of making quality detailed products. Every object I've seen developed for SOW is more detailed than its WOP counterpart. WOP borrowed some there expertise from the IL-2 development.
While WOV is very good it has some way to go to even match some of the detail in IL-2 let alone SOW.
Can WOP eventually become more detailed...certainly and they are currently improving their product every few days.
I'm not sure yet that the developers of WOP even want to go to the detail that the SOW developers are trying to achieve.

From what I understand, it is not the same engine. Your correct gx007....Gaijin used their own terrain engine. P.S. I may have found a solution to your braking problem in WOP, if you assigned the brakes in the Controls/Devices axis setting. Check WOP forums.

It's clear from info given by developers of WOP they don't intend to have the depth and flexibility that IL2 offers or SOW for that matter.
I find it amazing all the people comparing the graphics when clearly it has been stated the WIP from SOW are low quality shots.
Clearly graphics don't matter as much as some people think they do, a lot of the people who bought BOP have gone back to 1946 because -GASP!- despite the downgrade in visuals it is a more enjoyable sim.
I'm one of them. 1946 is simply more fun than BOP because the majority of BOP online matches are arcade, there are no take-offs and landings outside of one silly game mode (capture the airfield), and even on sim difficulty in BOP - there is no element of suprise because everyone can track you on a map.
BOP would be better if they gave some control to players to adjust settings to tweak gameplay to work for them - but like many console games they make it a rigid feature set. The result just doesn't give a sim community anything to work with and I'm certain WOP will be this way too.
It is and will remain a console-business model game applied to the PC and the clearest indication of that is they (developers) have already talked about a sequel to WOP - which I'm sure they intend for you to buy in a year's time.
I have way more faith in Oleg's ability to deliver a WWII sim that the community can embrace and make it their own. A sim with depth and much thought put into how the player experiences it.

fuzzychickens: You are comparing the console version of BOP to 1946 of course the console will be arcade.
Now the devs for Wings of Prey (PC) have stated that they are working on more customized setting options so scale the game how you want it: icons, no icons, HUD info, no HUD info, map with aircraft shown, map with no aircraft shown, ect.
Now I do believe that WoP will not be as in depth as IL2 with campaigns/missions/plane sets, but you have to realize IL2 has been a WIP for the past EIGHT YEARS.

What I've seen of WOP I don't like at all. I don't see what the big deal is. I agree with everything Chivas says about it. It sounds like it it would get a 70% or 80%. Decent FM Decent aircraft and cockpits :P Lawnmower engines EEW. I DON"T LIKE IT I THINK IT'S F+CKED and I'm a 1c worshipper
+ good terrain graphics + very very fast load times + no pop-ups in the terrain + the code is highly optimised + engine management + decent FM and DM + decent aircraft and cockpits + working gauges

Does WOP run on XP and isn't SOW made for DX11? That should say right there which one is going to look better.
