Watching Disclosure Day.

We are so lost 40 minutes in, I cannot even begin to tell you.

So finally, at the great age of 61, I finally get around to watching the '70s TV drama series I, Claudius. It has long been recommended to me but never had the opportunity to find it anywhere, and last week I discovered it is somehow on Youtube, the entire series.

It is a masterpiece of political & familial intrigue, if you like that sort of thing. Stars the greatest TV and theatre actors of its time, across several generations. The ageing makeup is perfectly passable (especially for 1970s BBC2) the sets are functional, but the direction & blocking are really phenomenal. Really was the golden age of British TV the 70s, when it gets it right, it really gets it right. I Claudius, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, Smiley's People etc.

As far as big names that non-Brits might have heard of, there's John Hurt, Patrick Stewart, Brian Blessed (Gordon's alive!), Derek Jacobi. Some of John Hurt's character's antics (Caligula) were deemed a bit strong, even for late night BBC2.

Each scene was acted in its entirety, meaning it was filmed more-or-less like a theater production, everyone had to know all their lines, where to be, which camera would be on them etc. for several minutes of unbroken recording. There are several cameras, but only one performance of each scene. Some of them are long scenes.

Can recommend if you like Roman history, intrigue, old school acting & direction excellence.

The creator of Game of Thrones has mentioned in interviews that “I Claudius” was a major inspiration for him when he first set out to write his GOT books.

I can absolutely see that.

It would cost you close to 25 bucks to watch it one time in a movie theater so 25 bucks for a digital version that you can watch many times is actually a good deal.

Finish watching all 20 episodes of World War II with Tom Hanks.

Some of it was wrong.

So wrong.

Did no one double check the material before editing it into an episode?

Like using footage of American Douglas TBD Devastator torpedo bombers dropping torpedoes during the Pearl Harbor episode.

Also too much time was spend on some events and then repeated too many times in subsequent episodes and some events were just entirely glossed or skipped over.

Tom Hanks narrated every episode via voice over.

He only appeared for 1-2 minutes at the beginning and end of each episodes.

But each time he appeared, he resembled walking death and his face looked sunken and unhealthy.

Is he ill?

I've been branching out via Netflix these past few weeks. Just finished watching two really well done detective series, one from Sweden (The Are Murders) and one from Finland with three seasons called 'Deadwind'. Started to watch a British detective show titled Department Q. It's slick, the dialogue is really well written. YMMV. Normally I'm watching K-drama, Mando-drama, J-drama, so I figure branching out a bit is a good thing from time to time.

American Rampage tier '80s action schlock with a solid synth soundtrack, just the way I like it.

I noticed Cameron Mitchell is in it. He was in two movies that were riffed by Mystery Science Theater 3000.

The only Cameron Mitchell I know is the character that Ben Browder played in seasons 9/10 of SG1.

WOW ! CB pretty impressive of you to identify it, didn’t even the think the picture of it was real. It feeds from a proprietary helical magazine mounted on top, available in a 50 or 100-round capacity. The factory sights enable accuracy to about 60 meters (197 feet) not bad, but 100 m is still a reasonable range. The Helical Magazine threw me off. Thanks CB, now I want a Calico M950 in .22 & 9 mm. Looks like a fun gun, wonder how available it is and how much it goes for. Helical Magazines fitted to rifles are pretty rare, most common one is the Type 88 assault rifle.

Calico Light Weapons Systems went out of business in 2024.

Running Scared (1986)

A black white buddy cop film that came out a year before Lethal Weapon.

It's not great and there were plenty of better movies that came out in 1986, but it's very very '80s in a good way.
