Inspired by PM.s first game thread, which sim for you has the most effective rose-tintiness?

For me - honourable mentions go to Longbow 2 and B-17.

But the winner for me is Tornado for the Amiga. I very deliberately have not sought out videos or anything for this as my memory is that it was amazing and immersive, and that's how it will stay

My favourite detail was remembering making multi-element missions, with each flight's waypoints and targets set up, first wave taking out defences & radar etc and later waves (me + wingmen) taking out high value targets defended by those defences. I could set these up to the SECOND, so that I could see earlier flights flashing across in the distance as I made my rapid approaches.

In my mind it seemed like DCS but I expect it looks like arse now, maybe 8 colours and maybe 5 fps, cockpit like a Lego image.

Funny thing is the original Gunship is still fun to play. Arcade like, but... no nonsense action.

Secret Weapons of the Luftwaffe. I absolutely loved the “strategic” mode where you could run the fighter air defense of Germany and even re-allocate which factories would be running and what they would be producing. And yes, as the German player I would heavily defend Schweinfurt with as many fighter squadrons as possible!

You could also run the 8th USAAF bombing campaign against Germany by selecting the targets for the day and which bomber and fighter groups to use.

Had a CD with Aces Over Europe, Aces of the Pacific and Red Baron on it. All three were gold, but I loved the Pacific theater the most.

Referencing my response in PM's thread, that would be Falcon for the Atari ST. I really liked the ST at the time, but of course it didn't have nearly the software support of the DOS world, so I was always jealous of the things I'd see released for the PC, especially flight simulators, but so disappointed in how they looked with EGA. I'm a big F-16 fan, and Falcon was always touted as one of the best sims, so that's the one I really wanted.

I grew up in Alaska, which is far away from everything, and I'd read in magazines about all the cool stuff that was shown at ComDEX in Las Vegas, and always wanted to go, but thought it'd never happen. Then, after I moved to California, I was able to make the trip to ComDEX and had a blast looking around. I went to the Atari booth, and they were showing off Falcon for the Atari ST on one of their machines, and I nearly blew a gasket. I hadn't even heard that it was on its way, and there it was, running on an ST and looking way better than the PC version.

Once it came out, I bought it immediately, and loved it. A roommate bought it too, and we ran a 25' null-modem cable across the apartment to play head-to-head, first time doing multiplayer, so all in all, that sim is a great memory for me.

Janes WW2 Fighters got me started in PC gaming and sims and Janes F/A - 18 got me on the long road of hard core flight sims and PC expansions and upgrade after upgrade.

But, MiG Alley as simple as the graphics were, sucked me in deep.

Falcon 3.0 was the first sim I played MP via a null modem connection. It worked quite well!

1991 was a great year of flight summing for me. I bought both SWOTL and Falcon 3.0

Gunship from 1986 by Microprosse. My imagination ran wild while playing this game.

Grand Prix Legends. It is still the greatest racing sim of all time, if you ask me.

For flight sims, it's got to be a tie between Fighter Squadron: SDOE and European Air War. The atmosphere in EAW in particular is still second to none.

It won’t happen but if some publisher/developer ever made a remastered Grand Prix Legends with current day graphics I would gladly pay 60 dollars or more.

There are mods for Assetto Corsa to make it into a "modern GPL." I have tried it, and it just isn't the same, even if it looks very good.
