I watched “The Duellists” again today. I think this has to be one of most underrated debut films by any director. In this case Ridley Scott did a masterful film adaptation of the Joseph Conrad novel. I do not expect anyone else ever trying to make their own adaptation of this novel for the simple fact that Ridley’s version can’t be superseded IMHO.

“The Last of the Mohicans” is such a brilliant movie for many reasons but what I like most about it is that it doesn’t portray any side in the war as either the “good guys” or “bad guys”. Even Magwa’s motivations for revenge can be understood to some extent. I’ve watched this movie now at least 25 times in my lifetime and will watch it again before too long.

I saw The Duellists for the first time a few years ago and thought it was great. I hope to watch it again as it's definitely a keeper. I miss celluloid film and the era of film-making prior to the ramping up of the digital and internet age. I think the quality of actor and acting has suffered too as we dive headfirst into the detrimental and constant stream of being over stimulated and bombarded by this "information age". Though I'm technically not watching a reel of film spun on a projector when I watch an old film transferred to DVD or Blu-ray I miss the organic quality of film even with its imperfections and grain. Feels more earthy and natural to me. I really don't like how sterile or overly post-processed news films tend to look. I wonder how much film knowledge acquired over a hundred years might be forgotten if its left behind altogether. One of my favorite movies of all time, "Ben-Hur" from 1959 still looks stellar as so many of those classic movies do to this day. Also look how great a movie like "The Natural" looks in how they filmed it and the quality of lighting they achieved. I remember The Duellists not only being very well acted with great set pieces and without question the high level of sword training that is on display but it is also visually a beautiful movie.

I haven't watched Glory or Last of the Mohicans in many years but I agree Panzer, great films. Glory's battle finale is very stirring. I think my Dad actually worked with the actor who played the French General Montcalm in Last of the Mohicans once.

I've been watching some film Noir lately or films that are black and white police dramas. I really enjoyed two with Edmond O'Brien, one called "Between Midnight and Dawn" and "D.O.A." and another with a bunch of recognizable actors called "When a Stranger Calls".

I didn't know your dad worked in the movie business. Was he an actor or a crew member?

My Dad didn't work in the movie business. He had a twenty year career as an opera singer and I think Patrice Chéreau was very much of the theatre world so that's where that path crossed. I asked him about the experience, whether or not he got to spend any time with him one on one but my dad said he was too famous. Chéreau was the stage director for an opera called "Wozzeck" that my dad performed in. He said Chéreau was very elegant and worldly. I believe he indicated that it was a good experience though. My dad also said he liked the car that he drove which was an old Mercedes-Benz with suicide doors.

Ballerina, just watch John Wick instead. There's nothing really terrible, it's just an inferior version of a better movie.

Harakiri, this movie was great. A bit of a slow build up but it all came together in the end with some a good payoff and climax. Kind of an anti samurai movie where they lambast bushido and show them to be not very honorable at all. It was also written by Shinobu Hashimoto who wrote Roshamon, Ikiru, The Hidden Fortress and loads of other Kurosawa films. Supposedly he wanted to work with him on this too, but he was busy with Sanjuro and Yojimbo.

What struck me immediately the first time I watched "The Hidden Fortress" is just how much George Lucas borrowed from it for his development of the first Star Wars movie.

Do you guys remember " The Guns of Navarone " with Gregory Peck, came out in 1961 ? I am trying to find it again. The movie was nominated for seven Academy Awards and won for best special effects. I was 7 years old at that time. I watched it with my parent in an outside drive-in. The whole cast were good. I will keep searching it.Waiting for Project Hail Mary.

Terl9999, "The Guns of Navarone" can be found on Youtube. From what I've seen it pretty regularly is free to watch. It was free just the other day but its back to buy or rent. I keep meaning to watch the whole movie as I've only seen half or so of it. "Force 10 from Navarone" has always been a favorite of mine as well. Peck, Niven and Quinn is a great cast.


I'm discovering that one needs to commit to watching a movie from start to finish when it is free on Youtube. As a lover of Westerns I've never seen "High Noon". Watched part of it one night and came back two days later and the free viewing was over.

Just finished the Perry Mason (Raymond Burr) series (271 episodes) for the 5th time.

Just started the Ironside (Raymond Burr) series for the 2'd time.

Both were/are a way to "pass an hour or two" pleasantly near the very end of the day just before climbing into bed. I do not "judge" or "memorize" content. I just "watch" things unfold as the "last hour of my day passes".

One thing that makes it easier to "rewatch" is the fact that the "culprit" is not revealed until the very end.

Some Detective series reveal the "culprit" at the beginning -- and, you know the "hero" will solve it -- so, what is there to watch?

I've used a few other detective series the same way over the last couple decades.

I have seen a few movies in the last month:

1) "The Mandela Effect" -- Do you remember that book about a family of bears, many, many years ago, that we'd read as kids (or to our kids)? Was it spelled "The Berenstein Bears" or... "The Berenstain Bears?" Thus is the premise of this film. Myself, I recall the books being titled "BerenSTEIN," yet when folks find copies of their books, they are "BerenSTAIN." Mostly. There are some found as "stein." What is the nature of our reality. What is real, what is not real? Are we being manipulated, or is our memory simply flawed. If any of this is interesting to you, watch this film. I'll say no more. Definitely a fun watch. *** 1/4 out of **** stars.

2) "Landscape with Invisible Hand" -- Aliens have invaded and subjugated everyone, and... well, they are weird. Neat scifi with a prescient message. *** out of **** stars.

3) "52 Pick Up" -- One word: Vanity. Wow. One of the finest beauties to ever grace this planet. Prince had great taste. This 1986 Roy Schneider noir-thriller delivers. Fantastic, underappreciated gem. You cannot go wrong with this one. *** 1/2 out of **** stars.

4) "The Duelists" -- Thanks Panzermeyer. I had not seen this, and figured, "Why not?" One of the best filmed intro scenes I have ever seen, aesthetically. This was a cinematographer's work of art. The story is pretty good, too. I enjoyed this early Ridley Scott film. *** 1/4 out of **** stars.

5) "Bullet Train" -- Most newer movies suffer from the same plague: They're too dadgum long, and for no good reason. Here, we have a train caper, where the director thought it was necessary to explain every single character, in great detail, often interrupting the flow of the picture. "Snatch" this is not, for brevity and "Bullet Train" are not synonymous. Too long. So so, but watchable, overall. ** 3/4 out of **** stars.

6) "Enter Nowhere" -- Nifty independent thriller starring Clint Eastwood's son. Some folks stumble upon each other at a cabin in the woods, and strange things happen from there. Science fiction, through and through, worth a gander. *** out of **** stars.

7) "Henry V" -- Shakespeare is a passion of Kenneth Branagh, and if one can get past the verbosity of the dialogue, they will find a good film beneath. This stands the test of time, but an action movie this is not. The ending battle scene, however, is one of the most realistic depictions of medieval battle slog that you will find on film. Based on true history, Henry the 5th was no coward, unlike modern politicians. He fought and shed blood, alongside his men, and was not afraid to risk his own skin. One can only wish that leaders in the present world had the courage to do the same--would have prevented many extended conflicts if they had. Good, and worthy of another watch. *** 1/2 out of **** stars.

8) "Scarface" -- The 1980s Brian DePalma classic. I had an itch to watch again, so I did. If you never have somehow seen, you should. A bona-fide perfect movie. **** out of **** stars.

9) "Jack Reacher 2" -- Not quite as good as the first movie, but still a decent watch. Some liberties were made to expedite the plot, and I can appreciate that, for the film did not need to be longer. Shorter might have made the picture better, however. Reacher, the do good ex-Major, roams the country once more to do good and right the wrongs of evil. *** out of **** stars.

10) "28 Years Later" -- The third installment of Danny Boyle's zombie love, this one adds some twists to the genre with some new stuff we have never seen before. Art house cinema, be sure, so don't expect a traditional undead romp. Missing are your traditional stereotypes, and in place we get an interesting adventure. *** out of **** stars.


Only one almost dud in the last month, I'm due for some turds again. Time to spin that roulette wheel and take some risks. I long for a modern, four star movie, but alas, Hollywood and everyone else has forgotten how to produce these.
