There are videos on youtube that explore some of the tunnels that hid gun emplacements.
Read up on this in High School in the 70s, some interesting facts for sure, and get orders to
go up there was a death sentence for most.

A mostly forgotten part of WWI. It must have been a horrifying experience up there in the mountains!
In all my years I've never seen the like. It has to be more than a hundred sea miles and he brings us up on his tail. That's seamanship, Mr. Pullings. My God, that's seamanship!

The biography of Erwin Rommel (who fought in the mountain war of WW1 as a young junior officer) is a fascinating insight into that front from the German perspective.
