Is RoF dead?

Nothing new produced, only the usual sale after sale after sale after sale... it's getting old.

I've not visited the RoF forums as it saddens me that the game seems to have been left to rot... does anyone have any new info on any rumours of new aircraft or things in the works?

I remember the posts from the headshed telling us that RoF would not be forgotten, it would still continue and that it would get the benifit from all the new tech going into BoS frown

Anyone got a glimpse of Christmas cheer for this game please?

Nothing happen, First the release of the eastern "lonley" front and I was the fool that actually did buy this separate game. Could not be integrated to RoF, but I wanted to support 777, we all know better now.
Later a release of a Sikorsky S16, Yep you read it right, the S16. screwy

Well, it's as I feared then... I have everything they put out, except that eastern front stuff, not interested in that one bit.
Looks like WoFF are the only team still pushing out WWI aviation then.

I still play ROF quite frequently but yeah, on the development side it seems to be done.

Instead of two separate teams working RoF and BoS/BoM as we were lead to believe before, it seems there was one split team that is now solely devoted to BoM.

I have also everything only not the Sikorsky S-16, the eastern front was my last support buy. Now I'm holding my wallet closed until there is some positive [future] sound from 777. I still think 1C is going to push Jason out of RoF/BoX and let RoF bleeding dead and heading to a World of Warplanes/WarThunder direction.

Hmmm, read on what OBD wrote down on the WoFF-X or WoFFgold version, after that no WW1 projects any more!!! In 2016 OBD will publish the last version, the desert times after RB3d will be back. Still can remember that FirstEagles and Wings-of-War arcade crap, what a miss buy. I was forced to go back to RB3d and played even a WW2 flysim [il2-1946] until the release of OFF3 in jan. 2009.
Believe me because the whole WW1 market is very limited, these games could be the last.

edit: As a WW1 flysimfan, I still hope RoF is not dead and OBD change there minds is going further in WW1.

There never was two separate teams. It's always been one team that, as of now, has its focus on WWII.

Ok, before this turns into another 777 slagfest lets put some of this into perspective.

The game was released in 2010. That makes this a five year old title. Since that time the game has been constantly updated, patched, fixed and added to. No, not everything that was wanted was put into the game but the developer put five years of updates and add ons into the title. The only game to have this kind of continued developer input was the original IL2 and that title had multiple 'new' versions that most of us had to pay full price for.

I'm not saying anything else, just remember that before we slag on 777 that few developers would have put as much time into updates as this one did.

That was because of the business model used. It required updates to add new paid for content.
The most effort put into patching was to releases new planes, most patches only had minor fixes bundled in with the new aircraft.

I have sunk more money into ROF than I ever did for Il2, probably nearer 4 times more than I ever did for IL2.

Once RoF was deemed to be not as profitable, they switched to BoS and now BoM and support for RoF stopped dead.

Saying 777 has ceased development of ROF isnt slagging, its fact. They may resume development, but as of now the last update was back in January. Well, I guess they *could* be developing something silently and saying nothing about it, but there has been no tangible evidence of this. Even all WkLinks points are past-tensefor instance, ROF used to be updated and patched. I stopped looking for new ROF stuff when they switched right from BOS to BOM. I fully expect a switch from BOM to BOwhatever, not ROFII, for instance. I still fly ROF and have fun with it but I dont expect anything new.

Ditto what JFM said

It is what it is.

We have a working Sim that still gives me pleasure.
If the team pick it up again it would be cool but I'm not holding my breath.

I don't believe ROF is dead...yet! I'm still logging in lots of hours thanks to Pat's Campaign, and have quite a few planes on the waiting list for future careers. I also believe that 777 will at some point come back to the sim for a plane here and an update/tweak there, but certainly not with the same vigor applied to BoS/BoM. My only fear is that they will pass up a great opportunity to do something for the 1916-2016 100 year centennial that is coming up next year. 1916 was the year that really got things going for the air war, and I hope that the devs realize the marketing potential that lies within their grasp. cheers

I feel that RoF is 'dead' in the sense that it won't be developed any more. I don't, however, feel that should stop anyone from playing it.
Because it still has quite a few problems (especially with AI) I won't be buying anything more from them unless they provide further support. Their business model is 'we provide the game in bits and pieces, we keep adding, you keep buying'. They've broken their side of that bargain, so I won't buy.
I last bought something after they did the big speed tweak - they fixed some massive errors, so deserved thanks. Of course, that tweak caused new errors which they show no intention of fixing, so no new purchases from me.

I think with all respect, that eventually the Russian 1C is totally taken over RoF/BoX and Jason/777 will be shipped back to the US.

RoF is only dead if people only wait around for new models to add to their collection and don't actually get on and play, and make missions, and having accurate missions with immersion only seems to be possible if someone in the community makes the content and the editor isn't exactly child's play. I saw WoFF at my Dad's over the Holiday and although I felt OFF was old looking and clunky because you had to use CFS2, WoFF is beautiful and smooth with lots of improvement. The Devs are obviously into historical accuracy and a game. Part of the reason the p2p trend continues is because people now can't wait for the next DLC to come out and they are loudly screaming more more but yet their is no one on the server. Yes the current business model is partly to blame but we used to get completely fleshed out games and now we get a bunch of models and a diorama to play with them in.

RoF is not dead. MP servers are still on-line and the existing plane set is still for sale. RoF development has, for all practical purposes, ceased entirely some time ago. They did put 5 years of development into it and it is what it is. Development cannot continue forever. They have now switched focus to WWII because, in all likelihood, it's a more profitable genre.

WOFF is currently still being developed - as it has been for over 10 years now - and the devs have even given us a couple of sneak peak screenshots of pilots slumped over in the cockpit having been shot, as a little of what to expect in WOFF "X". It was mentioned by Winder that this will be the last big update to WOFF, though Pol said they may still do DLC / add-on pack stuff for it.

As it stands, RoF has enough planes to make it fun playing multiplayer for a long time to come. WOFF has such a ridiculously large plane set (55+) not including add-ons, the entire western front plus England, countless historically researched squadrons complete with paint jobs and aces, that you could play its single player dynamic campaign 10 more years and still see new stuff in it.

Yes, it's sad when all major development stops, but on the other hand we aren't exactly left empty handed regardless of if your into SP or MP WWI flight sims. Personally, I'm into SP dynamic campaigns. WOFF has me more than covered.

I've been messing with Gamma and Contrast to enhance the visuals more. Pretty happy with the results.

I'd have an easier time accepting the end of ROF development if ROF2's was now underway (because in years past you'd get a couple of patches post-release and then you'd be waiting for the sequel/next release in the series anyway), but thanks to BoM I seriously doubt we'll see that.

I suppose it's conceivable BoM could crash so hard that they'd jump back to RoF/2 as a lifeline, but I don't think it will. I won't predict its possible success compared to BoS, because who knows how 1C will calculate its value to them, I just think the "777 rushes back to reliable old RoF in wake of BoM collapse" scenario highly unlikely. We'll have RoF as is for as long as we're allowed to, but I'd bet on WOFF 2 before I'd bet on ROF2.

What could be in ROF2 that we don't already have in RoF?

OO here we go, from BoS
What about better graphics to start with, BoS planes do have so much better looks, only they shine too much. BoS pilots are pilots, not that wood carved RoF thing. Activities on the airstrip, like moving soldiers in BoS. etc etc

But let's face it WW1 brings no profit nor a crowded mp, we can not demand that from the new owner 1C. So here a copy/paste what I did publish, to make RoF still alive, but at low cost, until 11-11-2018, yes I'm using this magic year.
-1]. Merge the official RoF forum to the BoX forum. It is cheaper for 1C to maintain the RoF forum and it brings in more visitors, maybe buyers.

-2]. Release some uber airplanes for the mp, Snipe and the Siemens, because it is rather empty on the servers. Think the mouse support is a rather good start to get new players to RoF mp.

-3]. Make the career mode open for modders and make it also off line available. WW1 fly simmers are rather conservative regarding online gaming.

-4]. Introduction of AI planes made by modders, like the Ju-52 in BoX. Much simpler FM/DM/graphics/no cockpit

-5]. More communication from 1C, the only communication right now is the sales news. BTW Jason where are you?
