I just put up an ArmA3 Epoch server running the Bornholm, Denmark map. All you need to play on it is the new Epoch mod for ArmA3 and the Bornholm map. You can Google for both, but the Epoch mod is found at the Epoch Mod Community and the Bornholm map at Armaholic. Disable any other mods that you may have running or the server will kick you during the join process. Personally I like this map. It is big and green with lots of trees and the sea surrounding the island. For those of you with a door opening fetish, this map has approx. 1.76 million objects and a lot of those are buildings that can be entered. Knock yourself out!

What I have learned today. There are no thirst, hunger, blood HUD indicators anymore. When you eat or drink something in your inventory (double left click on the item) it will show your hunger or thirst relative to the maximum. Something like this, 3000/5000. Loot is no longer found on the ground from what I can see so far. It is found in buildings. Search cabinets, tables, furniture and appliances, etc. The traders have nothing to sell at the beginning. They are stocked by the players selling loot to them. VON only works with direct chat. If you want to play with friends use Teamspeak or something similar. Apparently new players spawn at the same location. If you want to join friends you could meet them there. Otherwise, persistence will spawn you back where you last logged off. For those that hated the zombies in DayZ Epoch (ArmA2) they are gone now.

I'm told that there are AI Drones. Apparently they sound like white noise when nearby. When that sound changes to a modem handshake sound a fire team (3 units) is unloading from the drone near your proximity. There are a couple other types of AI (monsters) that I have not seen yet.

This server is PVE only. No player killing is allowed. If you decide to build a base, please do that in open space away from villages and cities. Do not use existing map structures. I'm currently playing on servers that are run like that and it works a whole lot better for everyone. I'm going to set a password until I have things sussed out. After a week or so of exploring I'll remove the password. The new Epoch mod is in its infancy. There are a lot of good things in the pipeline like AI missions and possibly roaming AI. After playing for a few hours today it's not too bad at all.

Server info:
  • All here at SimHQ are welcome
  • Dedicated server operates 24/7 with the exception of restarts and occasional maintenance
  • From the ArmA3 browser filter for Snakeyes NON- PVP Games | Epoch Bornholm
  • Password is cool15beans
  • Day/Night cycle
  • Server restarts every 4 hours with several warnings

Please enjoy it and I hope to see you on the server soon.

I killed this thing by a supermarket as I was foraging tonight. It didn't notice me as it shambled down the road so I shot it with my M107 and went up for a closer look at it.

I'm at a trader a while later with some clothes on. I also scored some NVGs for the night ops. I read that the traders sometimes glitch and will not buy or sell anything. When that happens exit to the lobby and rejoin the game. That fixed it for me and I was able to sell everything that I didn't need. To buy or sell items stand next to a trader and hit the "I" key to bring up your inventory. You should see a "Shop" button. Click on that and you can start trading. Traders are indicated on the map with black and red brown dots.

I'll get my Arma3 updated and join you sometime next week.

There are several youtube footage that showed folks engaging that 'thing' you shot. Apparently if you let it get up close it will blow up killing itself and anyone within the blast radius.

There is also some kind of supernatural being, wearing a hooded grey cloak. Only ever saw people run away from that thing. Don't know how or if they can kill it. At night it manifests itself within a foggy lighted aura (red or bluish)...kind of similar to someone having thrown a flare down. Be careful

So far that thing with no arms is the only adversary that I have found after playing for a few hours on Saturday. There is talk of having a setting that will control antagonist density for Epoch in future updates. Also, the mod makers are hard at work on AI missions and other types of AI. I'm liking it thus far. With a new large map to explore and basically a new game/mod, it is fresh. Bornholm looks to be a great map. Apparently there is a banking system now in Epoch. There are ATMs in the cities and I read that you can use a phone booth (remember those? LOL!) to bank at. No more juggling gold and silver. I have set the day/night cycle to begin at 8:00 AM and you should see about 40 minutes of darkness at the end of of the cycle. The server restart interval is set at 4 hours per the developers suggestion.

It's good to have you on board Harry. Steam will update your ArmA3 automagically, so you only need to download the map. Beware, the Bornholm, Denmark map is a large download. You may want to use a software that will recover a broken download where it left off last. I've yet to do some exploring at night, but I have NVGs and a NVS for my rifle now and a 1911 for close work. I'm going to check it out now.

My new ride. It's great to be driving and now I have some extra storage space.

I found a chainsaw this morning in an industrial building. Two more things that I have learned with the new Epoch. You unlock/lock a vehicle by looking at it an then hit the "I" (eye) key. When I first saw this SUV I walked up to it and used the scroll wheel on it. Nothing happened. Later I found out how to access the vehicles and I went back and got it. You can also access the gear in the vehicle by unlocking it and then hit the "I" key again and click on "Inspect." Also notice the icon at the top right corner of the screen. It is a dinner plate with a spoon and knife crossing it. That indicates that my player is getting hungry. I'm sure there is a thirst indicator too, but I have not seen it yet. I generally eat and drink as soon as I find something because I'm never maxed out and it helps to keep my inventory lower.

BTW, I removed the password lock today because the server is running okay and some guys from the mod forum wanted to join and check out the map.

After playing the new Epoch for most of the weekend I have decided to flip the server from PVE to PVP. Currently, the antagonist (AI) threat is just not there and the players risk is practically zero. Looting and selling gets boring after a short while. The map is big so it is unlikely that you will see anyone else anyway, but you never know. Having some "skin in the game" adds to the experience. Alliances are made and broken and so on.

New things that I have learned recently:

There is a banking system that you can use by utilizing an ATM or the phone booths for deposits and withdrawals. The currency is called Krypto. You gain Krypto by selling items at the traders. If your player dies with a wad of cash you lose it unless you can get back to your body in time to recover it. From what I hear, a players body despawns in about 15 minutes. Therefore, it is wise to make frequent deposits or use a lock box that is secured and hidden.

It looks like the base building could use some security updates. I don't think they are using the plot pole system from the original Epoch. Presently bases are not totally secure even when they are locked. Base raiders can destroy a base with explosives. So I won't spend too much time with that until the mod matures a bit more.

Oh good. I've been wanting to kill you for some time now. You have been my good gaming buddy for a while but there's this insatiable trigger itch that the sociopath within me wants to scratch that won't be satisfied until I spill SimHQ blood.

Hopefully Dozer, Mars and Hitch will join up too. If there were a bunch of folks more deserving to be ventilated, it has to be those three wink

Well I wondered what you've been up to. Everybody sorta just faded out for a while I guess.

Oh Harry I know how you feel. Might give this a try once Christmas rush is over and I actually have time to play again. Would be good to be running with the old group again. Those were good times.

LOL. I jumped on for a little while yesterday morning and killed a drone that was flying overhead. When I studied the body it said, "my name was Harry and I died from a 6.5 MM bullet to my fuselage."

Hi Wingnuts. I took a long break from gaming this year. I didn't play anything at all for about 6 months. I know you are busy now. Join when you have some free time to kill.

Hah! Harry-the-Drone is a distant relation but not the real McCoy.

I just got everything updated and downloaded. See you on the server soon. What epitaph would you like on your gravestone ?

If you don't see my server in the browser you can use the remote option. Just click on the remote button on the ArmA3 server browser and enter the IP and port #.

Tried that as well. Can't see your server as well? I do see other Bornholm ones, though only 3 or 4 when I filter Epoch in regular search. Remote just wants me to host as a option? I did remove all expansions as directed.

Wingy

PS; Do I need a special key to get it to run? I just copied the key folder in the download to the Arma3 key folder. Did I screw it up with that?

If you don't see my server in the list, just click on the remote button (bottom right on the server browser in ArmA3) and enter the IP # and Port #. The IP # and Port # are provided near the top of the thread. With Steam it seems a bit dodgy whether the server will show in the public list or not. I use the remote function more than half the time.

I was out looting this morning and I heard a gunshot. I checked the player list and nobody else was on the server. I went back to looting and I heard footsteps outside the house. When I ran outside, I heard an ATV start. I thought, "what is going on?" Then I spotted one of these sappers. They run up to you and then explode. If you are in the blast radius you will either get injured or die. He exploded before he got close enough to hurt me.

The heads over here. The torso is gone ...

Updated

I changed the server data center location with the same host and the reliability is looking much better. If you are interested, download the new version of ArmA3 Epoch and drop it into the ArmA3 root directory. Set -mod=@Epoch; in your Steam Launch Options or use a launcher of your choice and you are good to go. I'm currently using the Altis map which is native to ArmA3 so there is nothing more to download.

Download the Epoch 0.2.5.2 client here

Host: [US] Snakeyes PvP Games | Epoch Altis - (0.2.5.2) Survival Servers | SurvivalServers.com
Password: No password required

In the ArmA3 server browser filter for host: [US] Snake (that's adequate) mission: epoch and mission type: sandbox.

If you don't see the server in the public list you can remote in from the ArmA3 server browser.
Connection info: IP:192.111.147.34 & Port:8802

This Epoch update came out on Christmas. It makes the game more entertaining and the antagonists (enemy) are now scalable server side. I increased the probability of enemy encounters as you wander around the map. There should be plenty of vehicles on the map. (map spawns) Especially in villages and cities.

Feel free to join and play if you are curious how the alpha Epoch looks and plays for ArmA3. The zombies are gone. I was playing a bit tonight and I heard a drone, but I couldn't see it. The buzzing sound from the drone changed to what sounds like the old dial-up modems handshaking or a fax machine. When you hear that sound the drone is calling in an AI fire team to your location. It plays pretty well for an alpha and looks great.
