While the effects look good, I worry that this is a story we've seen before.
The robot that has something different about it that makes it act human, maybe even more human than many of the people around it. It suffers hardships and tragedy as it touches the lives of those it meets and changes them forever.
Even odds I just wrote a synopsis of the film that will remain unchanged after actually seeing it.

District 9 was good but Elysium was preachy, formulaic and heavy handed.

So wait, you've come to a conclusion on the flick based upon incomplete information, tid-bits garnered from a trailer, having already formed a opinion of said storyline as a medium, it's potential portrayal, and your opinion will remain unchanged even after having seen it?

District 9 was good but Elysium was preachy, formulaic and heavy handed. This. Elysium was very generic and the political message was very overt. District 9 was a good movie though. Although when Yolandi asked Chappie if he knew what a black sheep was, Chappie should have responded "you".

The possible saving grace may be that it's not a Hollywood Film, it's from the same people who made District 9 (which I liked a lot) and that Sharlto Copley is in it. I like his work and seeing as it's not Hollywood, there is hope that this won't be a Johnny 5 knock off.

I mean... a factory.
Making robots.
Quite capable humanoid robots.
Using radiation doses in final assembly.
Yet... all assembled and moved in the factory by...
...humans?!?!
Robots are cheaper per hour than humans.
if a robot can do it, even today, you get a robot to do it. Because its cheaper.
If its dangerous, like radioactivity, you get a robot to do it.
if its repetitive, assembly line work, a robot does a better job, fewer mistakes, and consistent enough to be faster. And dangerous = robot. And cheaper than payroll = robot.

This is never explained.
Ah but our iradiated hero who loves making war robots for the defense industrial complex, is saved by a robot pulling him to safety... a robot more employable that our hero.

Elysium spoilers below: Because the masses are oppressed by the capitalist class, who are evil and rich. They have the ability to readily heal all people all over the world instantly meaning that resources are not a problem. However, they are rich and mean, so they hoard/disallow these devices from being sent back to Earth. So the "illegals" must invade, kill the rich people, and everyone is healed and lives happy lives.
