I enjoy missions with those type of restrictions as well. One of my favorite missions was one of the opening missions in one of the Jane's F-18 campaigns that had you fly along the enemy coast or something and you were basically just assessing the enemy air defenses but weren't allowed to engage them (IIRC).

Another thing that you don't often see in stock or user created missions is aircraft systems failures that force you to get creative. Obviously, in the real world, you'd abort a mission with a critical component failure. But for simming purposes, it would be cool to see some mission designers fail the TGP or script an engine failure upon returning to the carrier or develop a slow fuel leak to complicate a mission.

I still think that the F/A-18C will be the ultimate in immersion because the carrier landing is always the cherry on top to any mission. Do all that combat stuff, survive the mission (success or not), and then you have the challenge of the carrier landing to contend with. The mission isn't over until the hook gets retracted so to speak. I also really miss the fuel monitoring and use requirements that Jane's F-15 and Jane's F-18 had. Particularly those ultra long JF-15 missions where you had to tank coming and going or there was no way you'd have enough fuel for the entire mission. And with the F-18, having enough to make a few passes to the boat at the end of the mission.

BeachAV8R

The fuel monitoring requirement is something I've been thinking about a lot lately, and it's been a nice consideration as I've been learning BMS the last few weeks. And especially for the Hornet, it would add to the reaslism- have a duty tanker flying over the carrier, and in an enhanced carrier ops environment, if you can't trap soon enough, get sent up to tank. Heck, if we get that Superhornet, I'd probably not mind taking a turn as duty tanker with a buddy package every once in a while.

Learning proper fuel management procedures like MIL or AB climb schedules, optimum cruise altitude, short mission altitude, CRUS HOME profile, penetration or max range descents, LINER/SAUNTER, etc. has been an educational joy in how to get the most out of the resources and knowing the jet's performance limits.

This is in the Falcon F-16. The F-18 is a challenge level beyond in fuel management.

I didn't think the F-16 was quite as difficult as the F-15E in Jane's F-15 simply because the Korea theater was a bit more compressed. You might fly a 400 mile round trip mission in the F-16 over Korea, but in JF-15 you'd sometimes fly 1000 mile trips with two tanker hits (one coming and one going). Of course, all that goes out the door if you get in a turning battle with a MiG where you are gulping enormous quantities of fuel. I always semi-enjoyed that "oh crap" moment in JF-15 when I did the strike, then climbed back up to cruise level for the flight back and started doing some calculations on fuel remaining when hitting the border tanker. Rut ro. Then you had to stay calm enough once you found the tanker to plug in and get the fuel..

Fun stuff. I think it is memories like that that make me yearn for a DCS Middle East map populated with Gulf War type equipment.

That would be pretty cool to be able to take up some buddy stores and send some over to returning flights. To further that dream - would be pretty neat to have a flyable SH-60 to serve as plane guard and have the ability to winch a pilot in the event of putting one in the drink (probably a much more frequent event in online sim flying than real life I'd imagine..)..

What I would like to see in DCS:

  • press/release button events in the joystick configuration, and the ability to map physical switches to simulated switches without editing .lua files
  • A map of Italy, or at the very least Tuscany which would allow to recognise terrain features (a man can dream)
  • Improved CAS simulation, including
    • more effective HE rounds to take out infantry
    • Faster JTAC interaction (at least for type 1)
    • Smart scaling so you have a better chance of spotting infantry
    • better infantry AI which can take advantage of houses for cover and provide mutual support
  • A Rafale or Eurofighter
  • An Apache (the British one, it has more powerful engines) with dual seat support (two human players would already be good enough)
  • Better facilities for mission planning and briefing, for example
    • smarter kneepad, so it contains only relevant airfield and approach charts in the most convenient order, perhaps we could manually choose them
    • data cartridge, or persistent weapon settings, so we don't have to dial them in again and again
  • improve the AT system, add a ground controller on airports

Lots of stuff, ED better get busy right now ;-)

Yeah, I've been thinking about that too. Though I would imagine in the interim it could be claimed in online play that a NATO partner with Mi8's is picking up SAR duties to free up SeaHawks for ASW...

Is Jane's F-15 that sophisticated? never tried it, but always tought it was a bit "light".

It is light, but has some components that made it really fun to play. And this is where nostalgia creep can occur, because when thrown into the Jane's F-15E cockpit after experiencing these ultra-realistic depictions in both Falcon BMS and DCS, there is a bit of an "ick" factor. The Jane's F-15E cockpit was only clickable in a few areas (around the MFDs and some other functions). But is one of the few sims that has modeled ground radar and the high resolution patch map use was a lot of fun. Tanking was pretty fun and overall it was a great sim. But it was definitely sim lite when it came to airplane systems and engines and stuff like that. But that's also a testament that good gameplay can be a great experience for lite users. Flaming Cliffs 3 level of detail aircraft are fantastic even if they aren't fully clickable with layers and layers of systems modeling. I'd personally buy and fly an F-15E or F/A-18C DCS module that was FC3 quality.

Good point! Is rescue swimmer or crew winching operations planned for the Mi-8? I know sling loads were being worked on..

Pretty interesting. Think there's a fix for modern systems, maybe I will give this one a go.

There's some rose-colored glasses going on with Jane's sims, but overall they were excellent. In exchange for a little less systems management than DCS offers, you got an entire living campaign and UI that really sucked you in.

DCS never lets me forget I'm playing a sim, same with ROF, Il-2, or any other "current" flight sim. Those old Jane's and MPS sims I could get sucked in and feel like I was the pilot in that conflict.

It's hard to put into words, it was a more a "feeling" than anything else. Don't forget that PCs were running with a fraction of the speed and storage space they use now, as well, and that limited how accurate a flight model or any other one thing could be.

I think it was the fact that they were relatively new tech and "wow!" factor was very high in those days more than the fact that they were more realistic (which they weren't, of course) or better games.

Even new, improved stuff still feels a bit 'old hat' these days. It would have to be really gobsmackingly, mind-bogglingly different these days, to have that same kind of effect.

"Back then" Jane's F-15 was the most realistic, hardcore sim available (together with Jane's Longbow Apache). Much more realistic than other Jane's titles like their 'Navy fighters' or 'Israeli Air Force'. Falcon 4 had not appeared yet.

And it had some great features like setting up a frag order in the briefing, the long boring flights followed by a few minutes of excitement or even terror, the ground mapping radar...

I see DCS as the future of air combat sims, so needless to say I have a huge wishlist whose items have already been listed in detail. Since ED is a small team with a lot on their plate, this wishlist is tailored to short term/"lower hanging fruit" requests:

  • Frag Damage (I would settle for damage probablity within a certain oval until proper physics could be implemented).
  • Fix multiscreen issues (apply glare/blackout/F10 map only to viewport and fix the "off-center" loading bug).
  • A Multiplayer spawn-conflict detection system so a client will not spawn on top of another client who happens to be in "his" parking spot.
  • A way to have skins personalized using decals so mulitplayer clients don't necessarily need the same skin to see your noseart.
  • While on skinning, a decal system more like Strike Fighters (tiered by nation, unit, individual, and placement by separate datafile instead of MAX file for more flexibility).
  • Option to not enforce "db_countries.lua" aircraft restrictions in Mission Editor (a more elegant solution than just adding fictional aircraft to the countries in the datafile).
  • Additional callsigns for aircraft/ground units, and the ability to add 3rd party voices for variety.
  • Ka-50: Tie VHF-1 channel frequencies to Mission Editor, not static LUA file.

I'm sure I have more, but this is a good start.

I think this is in already, at least to an extent. Perhaps you're meaning on a different level or with a particular weapon system.

One time I landed and was taxiing near (but not really close to) a burning TU-95 and when it finally exploded, my aircraft took noticeable damage from the explosion. I was actually surprised I was damaged given the distance I was away from the Bear. No systems were damaged but there was an audible bang and visible damage to my aircraft.

Interesting. I just flew the Ka-50 in 1.2.10 the other evening and put rockets on either side of a soft truck (within a truck length). The truck was still operational until I was able to get a direct hit.

Be nice to mod DCS so we can use 3d models of Swimmers or downed Pilots as "Cargo" to sling load for Sea Rescue OPS

Similarly I wish when you punched out, your movement on the ground would be visible to other players instead of just being stuck on that spot. It would be cool to have pencil flares and smoke to signal a SAR bird and then board it for a ride back to base.
