As i remember there was chinese airforce footage where they were using LockOn as training simulator. In ED forums devs admitted that they weren't aware of that. Who knows, maybe some air defense forces now are training on SAMSIM. dear firend... this is hp honor... and twice position our sam user! for republic of sam denfese in evry country for get fast skiil and minde control use or used or using sam simulator!!!! i hope goverment of hungry and neiberghood country send a free access msg to mr hp for creat bigest sam family at my eyes and my minde... mr.hp is a miracle of sam developer... no body can do it published like hp! this is our honor! i hope mr.HP can access to diffrent system at soon future

Hi, guys.. I was thinking about future of the SAM systems...(maybe miliang inspired me )... Particulary about protection against ARM and other weapons and ATBM capabilities... We all are familiar (thanks to Mr. Hpasp, of course), about russian (USSR) "Dubler" and serbian decoys (based on variouse types of transmitters). I don't want to comment the efficiency of them (at least Col. Dani and his men are all alive), but I was thinking about other batterie (possible) deffensive fitures we didn't discused. Here some of my toughts: 1. Radar/IR/Terrain masking. Watching some videos of night firing on Ashuluk, I've noticed that SAM position was very distinguished in the IR sector even observed true russian IR instruments. I had info about wide variety of IR reducing features (mainly covers from variouse materials), but didn't met info of their applications on SAM systems. Of course the heat of the launch cannot be hidden, but all other stuff (trailers and vans) must be consiled as much as it possible. 2. Eliminating/destroing ARM or guided bombs. Thinking about the HARM - there were some tank active self defensive systems, which (maybe) could be adopted to defence SNR and other vital components of the system against HARM and GBU's. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trophy_active_protection_systemOther possible way to counter ARM threats is developing full active giudance for the missiles. In that way the emmission would be "carried away" from the battery. 3. Advanced guiding methods/sensors. All systems we are familiar with are using radio fuse with/or command initiation of the warhead. Adding IR sensor could be a step ahead in dealing with decoys or any other counter measures against radiofuses. I'll be glad if anybody shares his view about future of the SAM's. Also some real analize of ATBM system of NATO could be usefull, because I am not familiar about those missiles and radars which are implement in this system (exept Patriot PAC 3). Wikipedia articles are not welcome... P.S. Interesting: http://www.f-16.net/news_article787.html

Hi, guys.. I was thinking about future of the SAM systems...(maybe miliang inspired me )... Particulary about protection against ARM and other weapons and ATBM capabilities... 1. Radar/IR/Terrain masking. 2. Eliminating/destroing ARM or guided bombs. Please be aware, that "our" knowledge of SAM system survivability is based on '60~70s SAM systems, against '80s HARM. In theory, the '80s multichannel - phased array based SAM systems are less vulnerable. The current doctrine is to stand up and fight against one wave of attackers from an unprepared (random) site, than quickly change position and wait for the next wave. (Thus the deploying and removing of any cover/masking should happen within 5 minutes.) During the fight, a modern SAM would illuminate all the time, trying to engage Weasels and incoming HARMs parallel. In case the system channels are over saturated by the number of the attackers, close point air defense should protect the Fire Control Radar against the incoming HARMs, at close range. 3. Advanced guiding methods/sensors. All systems we are familiar with are using radio fuse with/or command initiation of the warhead.
Current SAM systems use Command Activated Semi Active Radio Proxy Fuse, instead of Command Activated Active Radio Proxy Fuse used by (SA-2/3/4), and GSN Activated Semi Active Radio Proxy Fuse used by the (SA-5). In theory this method is immune to chaff, and fuse jamming.

Never ever heard anything about it. The most exotic Soviet "SAM" type I learned of, is the Anti Aircraft Carbon Dioxide Gas Dynamic Laser Prototype: 1987 concept illustration produced by the DIA, showing the expected configuration of the operational Soviet HEL DEW weapon system (US DoD). Some photos... ... and its test in Ashuluk. System components:

Is there a training (i.e. simulator) mode for the SA-3, SA-4, and SA-5 similar to the SA-2?

Well, this is possible only for the top armies, which possesed newest SAM systems in huge quontities... Linebacker II is an example of a stand-up fight (which I believe PVO losts due to not enough batteries in my opinion). So, countries with limited military budgets couldn't afort to possesed most advanced SAM systems, so they shold work with what they have.

From what I've heard, 30N6 firing radar of S-300 has very noticeable backlobes (signal from emitter's lens is reflected from rear ends of phase shifters, which are large compared to their aperture for radar signal, and antenna frame), so I bet HARM would be able to home on it from behind. The same applies to S-300V. I guess, that is the reason why newer radars, such as that of Korean KM-SAM, have solid shroud around the radar's rear.

While we are talking about SAM systems of the past, a brief sneak peak into the SAM systems of the future. The Morfei (Morpheus), a new Russian short-range SAM, will have a unique hemispherical active phased array radar. This would allow target engagement 360 degrees in azimuth and 180 degree in elevation! And, of course, simultaneous engagement of targets coming in from opposite directions.

It could, but I doubt that - it is in active development now, a lot of money been spent and Almaz is very determined to bring a life to it. EDIT: Although I must admit - development of such an unconventional antenna will be a major challenge!
