The number of available titles, or how popular one is over another, at least for me, it a no factor when deciding to buy a PC game.
The way I see it, these days of mass market appeal, the more popular a game is, the least challenging and fulfilling experience would be for me.
And regarding the number of available titles...for some reason most games available are a derivative or a port for a game that was designed for a console. Personally, I think that also takes away from the design and technical aspects of the game. The fact that a game is available for PC, does not make it a PC game.
I forgot my own criteria when buying RAGE and BF3. I thought they would grow on me...even though they were not looking promising regarding my taste in gaming. But hey!...everybody was jumping on the wagon! Didn't like either... back to buying games AFTER release, and after several reputable reviews have been published. I will never Pre-order a game again, just to get the luxury items that often have no difference in gameplay anyway.
I do fly sims often... a few times online, but not as often as I used to. I think the technical aspects of simulation have gone through the roof, but to me the more modern sims seem sterile and have no soul. They simulate a plane to the last rivet... and all else is just scenery.
Count me in as a grumpy old fart...
