I recently began running USAF on the Windows XP side of my desktop after running it w/o problem on the W98 side for years. However, my joystick finally wore out and the new one required this change.

I have read all the info on USAF & Wxp.

So far the only difficulties I have run into are these:

1. On the Tacticle Disply map and Brief text screen the graphics at the bottom of the page where the various flights (Austin, Buick, ..... Dodge) should appear show bleed-thru grahics from the previous mission load page instead. Any ideas.

2. Also, the QME editor patch only shows stock aircraft and not the additional aircraft I put in my version of the game. Anyway to get the editor to recognize these other aircraft or do I just get the stock?

Thanks

Hey,

All I can say is that I don't get the Bleed Through issue you describe. I haven't added any additional Aircraft so I can't speak to the QME problem.

For QME, though, are using the USAF Utilities LAUNCHER that includes the QME launch?? That might help.

I am running the stock game with the 1.02 patch and Floyd's XP UI patch if that makes a difference.

Running the 177.79 Beta Nvidia Drivers. All seems to work OK but I haven't done much more than some of the training missions. Hoping to install PURE/MiniPro to see if it evens out the jerky nose bobbing flight model. I never had any pre-XP experience with USAF so I can't compare, though I do have it loaded on my old Win98 P3 550 with Voodoo 5 5500...

Recluse -

What is the XP UI patch for, and is that something you can email me? I see it at Gulfknight's site, but he requires a fee. I'm unwilling to pay since he is charging a fee to people to download for some of my missions sets without my permissions. I have always intended my work to be available for free.

The game itself runs fine.

For QME, I'm using the QME utility.

Thanks

Hi Dragon,

The XP UI patch makes some of the UI Preference screens available that were blank or unreadable previously (but doesn't fix the behavior of the Dropdown boxes that don't work). I believe the issue is that the original bitmaps were very low (8 bit?) resolution and are somehow not displayable on XP so the 'Floyd' basically uprezzed all the affected bitmaps. I am sure I am over simplifying if not outright misunderstanding..as I tried to do the same thing with some of the wrapper bitmaps in IAF to no avail. I would bet it fixes your BLEED problem.

I can send you the files. Will do it tonight. I pinged you on ICQ last night, but you didn't answer. Eugene said you were over at Striker's comms, so I should have dropped in and could have sent you the files then.

I will also send you the USAF Utilities Suite that I have. Maybe the built in QME launcher there will work for you as well.

Thanks Recluse. I hope you're right about the UI patch fixing the graphics glitch.

I run the patched stock version 1.02 & a much modded version of the unpatched 1.01.

BIG THANKS Recluse!

The XP UI patch fixed my screen problem and the game runs fine. I applied it to both versions I have (stock and modded) and it looks great.

I can deal with the drop down menu issues by making any changes in the game through w98, then restarting under xp, which is the only side my new HOTAS works.

I know this is an old thread but USAF is an old game... smile
I too am looking for the UI fix. Is it not available anywhere but gulfknights page?
I would really like to play this game, but without the preferences menu its hard to configure. Also if he is charging people for mods intended to be freely distributed, I do not want to support that. Anyone know what files the patch changes? Can it be done manually?

got it working. kinda.
i found a torrent with the super pro 9.4 ui fix and applied that to my stock USAF folder. I can now get into preferences and change just about everything but the resolution. It does say I am running super pro, but still works. Ill post back any more findings...
However, I did manage to get the game running in 1152x864...
I had to edit my player.ini file.
its in USAF\Pilots\Pilot Name.ini
look for the lines that look like this about half way down the file in the [preferences] section:
Record11=Width of Resolution|1152|1024
Record12=Height of Rsolution|864|768
Record13=Depth of Resolution|32|16

I also changed these just a bit further down:

Record35=Cockpit width resolution|1152|1024
Record36=Cockpit height resolution|864|768

I think 1152x864 is the max resolution you can use. I tried 1360x1024 and 1280x1024 and 1280x960 no joy.

I think the first number is the requested setting and the second is a default, but it also seems if neither works the game reverts to 640x480.

The first time you run the game after changing the ini it will say the files are bad and you need to reinstall, just hit ok and run it again and it will work. smile

quick mission menu drop downs dont work either.

Good luck!

PS just tried click Extra settings in the prefs. Set my resolution to 1280x960 smile

Glad you got it running.

There is no fix to get drop down menus working in quick mission editor of game, or to get screen res drop down menu working in preferences under wxp.

Hey, Dragon! Nice to see you.

I just checked my USAF Super pro 9.4 install - still runs well per the instructions for installing that come with it. One odd thing I get, but Recluse does not - with fairly similar hardware: I cannot run the stock version or Pure version of USAF. No matter what I've tried, they won't run at all. But SP9.4 runs fine.

Weird.

By the way, do you know any solution to play Jane's IAF in Windows XP? I completed the game in Windows Millennium and I would like to play it in XP too.

I have not heard of success for IAF on XP. I know Recluse tried hard recently. You might check with him.
