Why can't some developer upgrade/repair this sim a la Falcon Allied Force or Battle of Britain? It's easily one of the best I've ever played!

There's been discussion in this forum regarding an upgrade ala Battle of Britain II and, as expected, called Mig Alley II. The source code is readily available, but the knowledge, resources and manhours are always in limited supply. It looks like Shockwave's next project will be Flying Tigers, but it appears Mig Alley II is still on their to-do list

Great info Spectre, I'll cross my fingers... Still think Mig Alley was one of the most under-rated sims of all time!

I completely agree. In fact, compared to the IL-2 series, the AI seems far better, IMHO. I think it stands very competitively with more recent air combat sims in terms of playability. To me, it's the best of both worlds...stick and rudder flying, Mk.I eyeball tracking, and close-in combat like WWII, but at jet speeds and flight envelopes. Let us hope any updated version will properly emphasize stable online multiplay. High speed connections and home networks abound whereas they did not when the original was released.

That thread really hints at a Mig Alley II. Especially with this quote from Scott at Shockwave.

Quote:
We've already ported one WoP aircraft to our BOB2 engine, and it's high priority for us to streamline this process as much as possible. We are continuing to make new aircraft for the future, and document along the way.

We are moving into jets more, but certainly have no plans or desired to stop making props. We're just expanding a bit here, and have some really great jet engine tech in our Absolute Realism process already (have been working on jets for some time now behind the scenes). Yes, doing a Korean war sim like Mig Alley is of interest to us.
I'm guessing that Mig Alley II would use the BoB2 engine which is a modified BoB engine which is a modified Mig Alley engine.

Scott, if you are out there was it possible to add completely new aircraft to the BoB2 engine? Thus increasing the total number of flyable aircraft. Or was that number pretty much locked down by the code that Rowan did?

Thanks,
Spritle

They will be able to add completely new A/C using the BoB2 engine code. They are doing just that with Flying Tigers. I am pretty sure they will eventually do a Mig Alley II or if not a whole new jet combat sim based on the engine (nothing official just my personal opinion) but I doubt it will be in 2007.

If you like things in Mig Alley, then you really need to try BoB2 now that the 2.05 patch is imminently going to be released. I know one is jets and the other is props but the elements cited as big strengths are in both games. BoB2 is now NOTHING like the buggy game it was upon its initial release about a year ago. Look for video clips on the video forum here at simhq.

Good point(s) SeaVee. One reason I'm so eager for a Mig Alley 2 is because BOB 2 is such a well done remaster.

I am sure we will get back to Mig and ,yes, the BobII engine is our committed engine of the future (which is based on Mig).

We will be able to add new A/C to the BobII engine and as SeeVee said we will be doing that for FT.

Just one more clarification please.

In BoB2 the only flyable aircraft that I know of are the Spit, Hurri, 109, Ju88 and maybe the 110? Bringing the total flyable to 4 or 5. Can the BoB2 engine support say 10 flyable types at the same time?

Mig Ally had P-51, Sabre, F-80, F-84 and Mig-15. I'm hopping that in a Mig Alley 2 we would be able to fly many of the other aircraft from that war.

F-82
F4U-4
F4U-5
F9F Panther
F2H Banshee
AD4 Skyraider
F7F Tigercat
Meteor Mk 8
SeaFire 47
SeaFury
Fairey Firefly

Yak-9U
La-9
La-11
IL-10
Tu-2

and if you are feeling really generous
A-26 Invader

All of those aircraft plus the originals. So around 21 flyable aircraft plus the a.i. controlled B-29 to plan missions around. I know I'm dreaming, but you would have built the ultimate flight sim if you can pull it off.

Spritle some of the aircraft you would like to see are already in Mig Alley presumably as AI that turn up in campaigns, thats just a guess,
since I hav`ent got into that yet.To make them fly see the the instruction s below.Although not fully functional it`s interesting none the less.
I read this on this forum many moons ago and full credit to the member Drawde for the posting.I tried the Meteor useing this formulae and it
worked fine but unfortuneately as stated no guns.Sorry if this Info is common knowledge.

I reinstalled Mig Alley the other day, and after looking in the SHPBIN directory noticed some odd
.SHP files for aircraft. I tried replacing the default planes with these, and discovered some
interesting things!

To use these aircraft, rename the .SHP file for an existing, flyable plane (e.g F80.shp) to
something like backup.shp, then make a copy of the new plane's SHP file and rename it to that
of the flyable one. The cockpit, engine sound and presumably flight model are the same as the
original, and (except with the Yak-9) the weapons do not work. However it is still fun to see
them in the game (I wish they'd kept the RAF Meteor and Sea Fury in!)

This is a list of the SHP filenames for these aircraft. I've included the already known non-flyable
ones (B29, B26, C47 and Yak) for completeness.

CORS - Vought Corsair
T6 - Harvard/Texan trainer (perhaps intended for the training missions?)
MET - RAF Gloster Meteor
F82 - Twin Mustang (very strange-looking!)
B26 - B-26 Invader
B29 - B-29 Stratofortress
IL10 - Soviet Il-10
YAK9 - Soviet Yak-9 (has working weapons)

These two transport aircraft seem to have proper 3D models,
but don't seem to be flyable (crashes MA when loading mission)
C47 - Dakota/Skytrain
C54 - Skymaster

These aircraft were evidently "cut" entirely and their 3D models are blank, only 80 bytes long.
F9F - Grumman F9F Puma/Cougar
FLY - RAF Firefly?
FURY - RAF Sea Fury
 SKYR - Douglas Skyraider

Yes I have seen the T6 in a few missions. He is your FAC and targets your ground targets with smoke rockets. I have also seen the F-82 although he flys off as you begin this mission. I have seen screen shots of the Corsair, but never ran accros one. I think I have even seen the C-54.

Unfortunately there was a research error on the B-26 and Rowan incorrectly modeled the Martin B-26 Marauder and not the Douglas A-26 Invader. Oops. I'm hoping they can remake Mig Ally and have it even better than BoB2.
