What made me explore the second movement more is a project that fell on my lap at work. I am doing digital transfers to a series of 1/4 inch audio tapes (reel-to-reel) that feature an ex-faculty member of my university/employer. He was a professor of piano and concert pianist at Columbus College (now Columbus State University). So far I have transfered performances from as far back as 1963 (Eastman School of Music). One of them was a performance of Tchaikovsky's 1st Piano Concerto with the Columbus Symphony Orchestra conducted by another former professor from my university. Hearing the second movement made me appreciate again the commitment that this school and this community have made over the years to the advancement of music and overall cultural appreciation. If you have an appreciation for these things, take the time to attend a local performance of your favorite orchestral piece (or opera, or ballet, etc). Being an audience member is the ultimate show of support . . . it is, after all, where all of the other efforts are aimed.
