When I see those dopey tracers I automatically hear Star Wars battles in my head (which can be a pleasant experience in moderation).

Great vid, though.

So they have the tracers right then, as has been mentioned often the lasers in Starwars were copied from the tracers of WW2 planes, and real tracers look laser like etc etc etc.

Tracers look nothing like that. Then (by actual video) or now (at least on the ground...by my firsthand account). Look, you can say "it's not a big deal" and I may agree it isn't a big deal (I do think they look like they're shot out of an X-wing) but don't give me "they have the tracers right."

The tracer issue is a good example of what seems to plague this entire game, it's just not finished.

I'd like to see this sim achieve full fruition someday, time will tell.

You can add Adagio for Strings to any video clip and it would make it dramatic.

Im only going on what has been said by many that have actually fired them, apparently only issue is they are possibly a bit wide, please dont use real guncam footage as an example it has been discussed over and over that these are affected by the camera shake and as I have already said Starwars copied WW2 so they should look similar.

Have a look around the forums and there are quite a number of ex military types that have confirmed the tracers are just about right, but maybe slightly wide and bright for daylight, real tracers do not wiggle, that is camera shake.

The wobble isn't what I'm talking about. Bullets are ballistic objects. And they DO wobble somewhat, though not noticeably enough to model on purpose. Even a perfectly balanced bullet will wobble. And what are mass produced and put into general combat during a war, or for that matter during peacetime, let alone 70 years ago, are not exactly perfect. But that's not what I'm talking about anyway.

I'm telling you that tracers, and I HAVE FIRED PLENTY OF THEM, do not look like 20 yard long beams of light.

very nice vid!

two thingies

a) tracers look even more star-warish because of filters applied to make it look like old guncamera film

b) it would be even more awesome if the guy did add camera shake when firing - just a thought smile

Dont yell at me, I'm not your wife. I do understand basic ballistics, I am commenting on a subject that has already been discussed many times and the general consensus of those that have fired many types of tracer ammo, seemed to be that CoD was pretty close, if you disagree that's fine, but there has been quite a bit of footage posted from varying angles to allow for the camera shake effect and the tracers look quite a lot like CoD, personally I think the guncamera style tracer looks better, but that is probably from being conditioned by watching many hours of this type of footage.

I find it amazing that there are still people who think the tracer effect in COD is realistic.

There is plenty of period footage the early .303s out there (not later footage when different guns and ammo were used) and it's obvious to anyone that they were not long continuous thick beams of light. Every few rounds was a tracer to check aim. It was nothing like what we see in this game.

I have said this before myself but the laser beam effect and huge orange fire effect puts me off buying this even if they could get it to run properly.

Who sees "continuous long" beams of light in CoD? I don't. The tracers I fire look around 1 meter long or even less. From the footage I have seen of modern-day tracers it looks just about right to me.

Re: the luminosity it is probably difficult to get it right in a computer game where the same objects have to cover all times of day, I suppose. Sometimes it will be a bit off in the sim. Should be better in the next gen of hi-fidelity flight sims, if there ever will be one, which I doubt after the drubbing CoD is taking (deservedly or not is up to your own evaluation).

Splatteris movie here (I always link to the Channel page of people, because that's where the makers prefer to have their movie seen):
http://www.youtube.com/user/splatteri#p/a/u/0/deo_TdUOhN0
....Is just blooody great! - Fantastic work. The parts where pieces fall of the planes are almost orgasmic (oops, did I say that?)

Only thing that makes it look slightly different from historical gun cam footage is the lack of wiggle of the tracer lines. I don't think it will be easy to replicate that with any movie post-processing, but I'm sure some gifted movie maker will prove me wrong...

Don't mind the tracers myself.

Spitfire when hit - does it lose its engine cowling every time? Seemed to happen a lot.

Nice pictures, shame there is little 'meat' in the game though.

Awesome video. I have to say that, on the tracer issue, modded Il-2 does a brilliant job of modelling the tracers. Haven't experienced CoD myself, but from videos, they aren't bad. Just different.
I think that, at the end of the day, it will always be subjective. It's a trade off between realism (well, realism in the eyes of the team) and personal aesthetics.

It is a sandbox program. There is as much meat as users put into it.

Eh? Its supposed to be a finished game. I didn't buy it to have to wait for some modders to complete it. If that's what the developers are expecting then they've got a hell of a nerve. At the moment I am only playing it very occasionally because of all the issues. I am sure some of the issues will be resolved in time (a long time) but I don't expect it will ever be the game I would like to see.

Oleg Maddox has stated himself that CoD attempts to show traceRs as seen by naked eye in reality, NOT as depicted by camera footage. Of course they look different, just like spinnning props look different in real life compared to video footage.

Props do look butchered in CoD btw- but we have Antiepilepcy to thank for that. Even with filter disabled, Ilya stated that props look nothing like they were meant to look before game code was changed.

Very good video, WernerVoss!
