Even if CoD pegged a silky solid 60 FPS with vsync enabled with this upcoming patch, I'd still be sorely disappointed with this sim.

Interesting that so may are only getting into RoF to get their new sim fix. Visually and immersively RoF sets a pretty high bar and IMO CoD will pretty much have to reinvent itself to reach this state, considering its current sad state (I guess in 2 years if we're lucky). I picked RoF up for 50% off right before the ICE release and never looked back, except to join in IL-2 weekly with my sqaud m8s.

Yes. I'm happy to pay for good stuff, with the emphasis on good vs alpha-grade crapola. RoF's planes are the dogs and I'd be happy to pay for the coming campaign if they had the sense to charge for it. I suspect I'm in a minority though.

So I guess what we are saying is that in an ideal world 777 Studios should make a BoB sim ?

Eeee...*sucks teeth*...that's a proper poser is that'n lad. biggrin

I reckon I'll give 1C another five minutes to sort themselves out...or their sim at least...before answering.

I don't really see your posting as a reply to mine, but cool that you got RoF, I have had it since the beginning and enjoyed it a lot since those early days. Then again, I am not used to absolute perfection in everything in life, as opposed to most of the haters in here, who seem to have lived charmed & fulfilled lives until the unfortunate moment when CoD appeared and ruined their lives to the extent that they have to moan about it forever after..

In an ideal world Nuggetx, Falstaff and Wernervoss would make us an amazing WWII sim. I wonder why they haven't been hired by a development studio yet?

We never in a million years thought that this darn full screen mode could give us so much trouble

It's probably just me but almost all the sims and games I play are running in fullscreen mode. Windowed mode is just being "Yeah it's running CoD and FSX in windows, plus the usual background applications" posh. We've been religiously turning off background applications for years

And will someone please find out smelling conspiracies at every turn- what happened to the fabulous OpenGL version of Il-2:BoB? The one with the pixel shaders and all sorts of advantages not the least of which was framerate. I'm fairly sure we're flying an Il-2 mod, I see no signs of a 'completely new engine'

Will going back to XP help. One reasonably wonders

I've never heard reports the CoD would have a dynamic campaign by the developers (indeed - I've only heard some reports for the 2005 SoW). A dynamic campaign and modified textures will both be provided by the 3rd party over the coming months (I consider both to be inevitable). The dynamic weather was mentioned as possibly arriving with the next product - I'd estimate two years, given the issues we're seeing in the initial release).

I'd say new terrain textures within six months, a dynamic campaign generator in eight to eleven months, and a new weather module in about twenty-four months. Of course, these are just hints at a time-table, invented by myself, based on how long it took for similar things to be developed for Lomac/RoF/Il-2. If I were a betting man...

As for "meat" in the form of new features and aircraft - that'll probably have to wait until after the holiday. They've probably been working extremely hard for a couple of months prior to release (and now for a couple of months after). That's my suspicion anyway. However, I still wouldn't be surprised to see an MG-FF/M.

That's probably part of the point.

Everyone who brings up ROF says "well it wasn't released well and now it's great" insinuating that COD will just develop and be that good one day. The problem is they are two completely different development projects and published two completely different ways.

One is a major single release. The other is a game that was built on continually updated features, future progress, new campaigns, new content (paid and upaid) etc.

Ubisoft isn't going to keep paying Luthier and his team to improve an already released product. Once the game is considered largely playable, that'll be it. ROF is completely different and ongoing past just engine fixes.

It's depressing in a way. Even if COD is 100% playable, it's still lacking so much.

Why don't you think CoD will go down the paid DLC route? Field kits, that sort of thing? Reliance on Steam points towards that quite strongly I think.

In some ways the success of RoF has validated the 'pay for what interests you' business model rather than the 'IL Pacific Fighters, etc etc' bigger expansion packs way that IL2 dev over the years was paid by. CoD being an initial weak release, but then paying for more maps, planes, field kits is something that RoF has led the way on - which is what we want, right?

Because I'm finding it hard to imagine Ubisoft continuing to fund any further development past getting the sim functioning. They have to be already taking it on the chin monetarily with this project.

Whether Luthier could even legally release DLCs or further enhancements on his own, I don't know.

Oleg was one of the pioneers of the continual upgrade model. Not only did he release several free upgrades and patches over several years, but there was a full decade of releasing new products which upgraded the engine (and content) - all the while under the supervision of UBI.

IMHO, the only difference is that RoF has been charging for downloads, rather than issuing upgrade DVDs.

If you've followed Il-2 from its inception you should realise that your point goes against everything that has happened in the past.

I feel like your are sticking your head in the sand.

This isn't 2001 anymore and simulations are already against the wall as far as being profitable. This nightmare of a release will only make things worse. Ubisoft is also a completely different company who does things completely differently these days.

I'd be shocked if Ubisoft funds expansions at this point.

I too am tempted by it, but need to muster the courage to get into all that early kite stuff - the era has never appealed.

I was in the same boat as you Frog, but I picked it up on Amazon for a digital download for $20 and now I absolutely love it. You really can't go wrong for the price. Now that I am more familiar with it and am more familiar with how these planes fly, I would gladly have payed $50 for the game.

I guess this patch update reporte just reforce my felling that they are still guessing.

We both have no idea what we are talking about. (Thought to get that out of the way already smile )

Why do you think COD has sold badly already? Why do you think Ubisoft has to pay up-front for the DLC to be made, is it on the assumption that 1C is running at a loss.

Where are you getting this private company financial info? Steam sales chart and user numbers look strong, where it's been on sale on-line (Justflight etc) it's been #1 in their sales lists. I just don't understand why you think they have lost money already?

Ubisoft offer other DLC content, why wouldn't the plan for COD to be more like RoF and release dirty/early and gain it back on paid content as time goes on? It's not exactly honorable, but it might work.

Also, looking at the forums (viewing now) popularity here, it seems CoD is already about four times the user base size to other flight sims here?

Yep, I'm playing the demo, looks great - far better than when I first tried it. I still think there is room for both world wars to be simulated in the air, i.e. it's not a zero-sum game of which sim wins or anything (unlike this thread) wink .

Kind of looks like the CoD devs were too.

Luthier is the only reason this game has not hit the round file yet. And I can count the # of Sim's I have played " il2 " that went threw the growing pains.

Any one remember the rooms that had. " NO CITYS, SMALL 8 player max " in Il2 on UBI. Now we have rooms with over 100 people and over 100 fighters to fly.

right
