From Luthier:

Hi everyone,

Quick update from up here on the flight deck.

We never in a million years thought that this darn full screen mode could give us so much trouble. It's the last thing standing between us and fluid framerate, and what seemed like a simple feature is taking forever to make.

I've said with the previous beta patch that we'd be taking some time off, but because of this patch we've all postponed our holidays and are working feverishly to get the patch completed.

Today was another day when in the morning we thought we were almost there, but as dusk approaches the realization sets in. We need another day.

The good news is that in the meantime we ironed out both Crossfire and SLI support and generally did a lot of other good things to the game. Rest assured that this one persistent full screen issue is not preventing us from improving the game in other ways and proceeding with the plan.

As we approach event horizon with the patch, we may or may not decide to release it as yet another beta version. SLI and Crossfire support are kind a big thing. We'll think it over some more.

I'll be back again tomorrow with a progress report, and hopefully with a patch!

The mind boggles. Every game I know of has full-screen as a matter of course. It's as basic as having a menu. Yet in CoD it's some kind of huge deal? The mystery of what went wrong with this game becomes ever deeper. Even the bloody Ubi logo causes problems. Who's ever heard of that one before, a publisher splash-screen logo causing problems with hardware? Could there possibly be anything left in or about this game that hasn't or isn't causing problems with it running properly? I think it has to hold the world record. dizzy

I gotta agree, who the hell ever heard of full screen being such a huge issue? Starting to wonder if they don't have all intern programmers and 3d artists. Would explain alot of things.

Somewhere very early on they set on some kind of promising but ultimatly doomed rendering process that is not industry standard and which is now giving them the mother of all headaches. They tried to do something brilliant with some kind of amazing new idea but either technology or time caught up with them.

Can't explain this any other way.

That makes a lot of sense. Just like Oleg did IL2 in Java (some of it at least). And/or they've lost the staff that originally coded it and someone who doesn't know it properly is stabbing in the dark.

Cool. At least the developers are working on the problems and we're seeing real results. I'm happy with CF support, maybe I'll get 40+ fps on 5760x1080 than the 20's I'm getting now.

Over this hurdle onto the next.

Sounds good - though I'll believe it's the last thing before a fluid framerate when I see it smile

What WW2 Fighter pilots say about Angels and Airspeed:

"Nice job of getting down to the basics - love your choice of a cover!" Col. Clarence 'Bud' Anderson

"I have enjoyed reading angels and airspeed, it should prove good reading for all interested in combat tactics and their application related to the fluid air environment and state of technology in WWII years. All the best as you make it available." - Col. Charles McGee - Tuskegee Airman

There are 2 things that can rescue this game:

1) US release (short term) - there is quite a few bucks at stake so they are canceling their holidays

2) competitive pressure from 777 (long term) - I was flying ROF online yesterday and, boy, is this game light years from where COD is now in terms of atmosphere (and it`s becoming better with new content/features). If 1C does not turn COD into masterpiece comparable to ROF before 777 rolls out something in the WWII dept., they`re up for meatgrinder. Competition rulez!

Having said this, kudos to Luthier and team for rolling up the sleeves and getting onto the race. It can only get better.

PLUS: the Moderator over at 1C is now saying `one step at a time` - see ? they`re learning.

SimHQ should set up a forum for this RoF, it sounds amazing. People who prefer speeds less than 30 mph could all gather there and compare payed compasses in a dark quiet room or something. smile

As for OT, patches are always good although not sure I buy into all the drama.

I might fork out for ROF. Seems to be getting good reviews lately.

I recently read it was amazing. Does it have 109's yet? smile

I too am tempted by it, but need to muster the courage to get into all that early kite stuff - the era has never appealed.

Oleg always used to brag that he liked having competition.

IMHO, RoF had a similarly troubled release (with a botched launch that alienated many users, a broken campaign engine that was ridiculously unrealistic, performance and reliability issues as well as lack of optimisation in som areas, the default AI had very imbalanced tactics in some mounts, the landscape has limited historical acccuracy and the modeling of the lewis guns treated them as Vickers...

Basically, RoF was torn at by critics and would have been shredded if it was expected to meet the same expectations some people have for CoD. However, it is brilliant and has progressed tremendously.

ok, I was not fond of WWI (played Red Baron a bit long time ago), but got hooked by ROF. The atmopshere, the FMs are amazing. In a way, I`m still not a fan of WWI (would therefore welcome ROF-like WWII sim), but given the current COD fiasco, I`m ready to trade WWII for a real sim with a great feel of flying (albeit, unfortunately set in Great War smile

Do you see any irony in the fact that if you had come across RoF when it was first released and had the same attitude you have now for COD then you wouldn't have the RoF we have today? smile

Michcich,
Did it ever occur to you that the comments you make, the way you make them, sound alot like comments made to your new girlfriend/wife about what she doesn't do well in comparison to your ex-girlfriend!!! Many can attest as of the results of that exchange but primarily these statements are unfair because YOU chose.
We all know the problems already, the developers are working on them and we are working on our emotional and constructive state. What is this constant comparison going to lead, really!!

it`s going to lead to a better product, Kadin. And as said, it`s not about whining, I do appreciate the efforts 1C are making to improve the game. And the bar is set high - it is ROF.

Encouraging people to not buy COD (even before it's released in the US) and settle for WW1 RoF is going to lead to a better WW2 sim? Got it.
