Just out of interest...try playing the game without cockpit view on... it's improved my fps alot! Does anybody else get the same result?

I think it would be obvious that you'll get better fps when you take the cockpit out of the loop. Just look at the cockpits, and think about how much resources they must take.

I know.. but it seems to be a huge preformance boost. All that computing power can't solely being going into the cockpit... or can it?

The cockpits are extremely detailed, so the GPU has to render a gazillion vertices. And the textures. And the lighting. And the shadows.

Of course switching them off improves FPS dramatically.

It's like wondering that looking at a dozen aircraft on screen results in fewer FPS than watching a single aircraft.

wink

so youre telling me all that GPU AND CPU power has been dedicated towards rendering a cockpit!... rubbish. I'm not talking a 5 fps increase...Im talking like a 20+ FPS improvement. I'm pretty sure outside the cockpit is way more detailed and CPU/GPU intensive then a cockpit.

Since you consider my oppinion rubbish anyway I'm sure you'll understand why I won't waste my time to explain the details of 3d modelling and rendering to you.

Have a nice day.

awww i am sorry! ^^ come back MR lovely para_Bellum. I just don't see why a cockpit would take up that much processing power? Computers these days can render much more complex objects with ease! But a cockpit that takes up a quarter of the screen chocks it.

biggrin

In Il2 the cockpits had (roughly) the same amount of polygons as a fully detailed aircraft model at LOD 0, which is zoomed in to close distance.

I'm pretty sure in CoD the cockpits have MORE polygons then the actual aircraft models. And it's not just all the polygons, textures, shaders, we also have dozens of clickable, moveable switches, knobs and buttons. We have gauges with needles that behave physically correct. AND the cockpit has a rather detailed damage model too. Did I already mention the lighting and shadows? Windows fogging and icing? All this consumes massive ressources.

Also, the engine seems massively focussed on GPU power, so switching such a performance-demanding feature off results in the FPS you have noticed.

Do you think they could optimize their cockpit?

I do. In fact I hope they optimize the whole damn' engine!

biggrin

hey para_bellum i've also noticed when i turned off my mirror.. with cockpit view ON my FPS rocketed up! I get nearly the same FPS boost I did with turning the whole cockpit off. maybe it was just the mirror taking up alot of GPU/CPU power... for some unknown reason.

Well possible. The mirrors cause a severe performance hit, I always disable them in any sim.

Glad you got some performance improvements that way.

I'd rather not play it before I turn off cockpits.
