But indeed when the environment doesn't appeal, it's hard to enjoy the gameplay. Not sure I'd enjoy red dead in middle ages, for example.
So it's safe to say that you didn't bother with Kingdom Come Deliverance?

I also have a couple of early access/first day purchases, like ArmA, Elder Scrolls, MSFS, with all others being watched with suspicion Starfield doesn't appeal to me much, I love that gameplay in an Elder Scrolls environment, but not so much in Fallout or Starfield. Can't really say why. Fallout is just too darned depressing.

While it looks like an alright game, it sucks that it came at the expense of a timely Fallout or Elder Scrolls sequel. I would have preferred that.

I would have preferred that. Consider that we're probably looking at a '28 release for Elder Scrolls 6 and a '30 or '31 for Fallout 5. A 15+ year wait for an awaited sequel is ridiculous!

So it's safe to say that you didn't bother with Kingdom Come Deliverance? I confess I did quit after a few hours, unsure why because it felt alright. A bit too slow for my taste I guess. Red dead is the only long game I stuck to recently, and mostly thanks to this forum.I did skip many secondary quests though.

I will add here that this means massive scope for interesting user created mods.

'when the astronauts went to the moon, there was nothing there' but 'they certainly weren't bored' Faulty reasoning there by Bethesda. The REAL astronauts weren't bored because they were REALLY doing space exploration. When you are sitting in front of a computer monitor at your house you NEED an interesting and fleshed-out environment to explore.

Hopefully, Starfield tries to mimic the real universe in most respects. In the real universe, I would expect fewer than one "habitable" planet per Star (and not necessarily inhabited). So, I expect to find "nothing" on most planets. I.e. most planets are just "filler" in a real universe. Not saying I'll like it when I start playing (after finishing Witcher 3). Meantime: Starfield Is Bethesda’s Biggest Launch Yet with 6+ Million Players
A few hours ago, Bethesda announced on Twitter that Starfield has officially become the company's biggest launch of all time, having already registered more than six million players.
It's yet another indication of the game's strong launch after PlayTracker surmised more than two million units of the $100 Premium Edition had been sold as of September 5th. Then, Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer revealed Starfield had registered over one million concurrent players.

That's my point. Sometimes full realism does not translate to fun and entertaining game.

My only advice re: Starfield... stay off the Steam forums
If you watch Jaws backwards, it's a heart warming story about a shark that spits out so many people that they have to open a beach.

My only advice re: Starfield... stay off the Steam forums The Steam forum comments are almost as toxic as the Youtube comments.

I notice the Steam review score is slowly going down. I think the highest I saw it at was 86%, it's now 81%. The user score on Metacritic is barely over 50% but that may be due to review bombing.

Either way I'm glad I didn't buy it on release and I'm sure the game will be patched up a lot over the next few weeks.

Elite Dangerous actually has excellent planet generation, too. So does Space Engine, and as an added bonus, is free--unless you want to throw money the dev's way for the latest features.
Then there's No Man's Sky, which is quite awesome. 500 hours on Steam does not lie... However, don't expect a TES style story/NPC experience here. Best played in survival mode, like pretty much anything else.

I'm only a few hours in and haven't touched any of the weapon/ship/outpost customisation stuff yet. Had a few entertaining missions (including one that draws heavily on Alien). Gunplay is tolerable but not great, companions are really only useful as pack mules or decoys but most of the time they like to get right into my line of fire. The biggest disappointment for me (other than the IMO infuriating UI controls) is that the game doesn't really entice me to explore much. Not having a useable map means that I end up fast traveling a lot of the time. And since you can't actually fly to and land on a particular location, fast travel is usually the only option, which really takes away from the experience.
Undercarriage lever a bit sticky was it, Sir?
