I've never played 76.
I may give it a try but there are so many new games coming out this year I'd rather play first.

Yeah, that's totally understandable. Maybe if Stalker had come out I never would have gotten back on this Fallout kick I've been on. I had only spent 10 bucks on 76 in the summer sale. But I liked it enough at the start to buy the Pitt DLC just before the sale ended. Honestly I didn't know that I wanted it or needed it. But I decided I'd rather have it and not use it at half price than to decide I need it and pay full price haha. So I'm in to it for about 23. I've been impressed by the community so far too. Compared to other shooter sort of games I've played online, FO76 stands out. It's not a PvP game really, although it's there and some dig it. But overall it feels mostly like a co-op game without much co. Or just enough co, and take it as you want which is the sort of balance I like. I compared it to Forza 5 before and it's the same sort of mojo for me. I have a harder time recommending anything to start out with. Since the perks you get are kinda random, you have to just adapt and roll with what you're given. Yeah, that's very true. perk packs are all over the place. And what you wear and shoot will be dependent on what you find. I'll kind of go with the flow a bit through to 50. But I feel like I should pick a weapons path, and it was never a question. I'm a light armor, sneak, rifleman sort of player. Power Armor is for radiation, not combat, but we'll see how long I think that's true in 76. I knew which armor and weapons I wanted just from reading forums. What's open is the rifleman/commando conundrum. Got the gun now, but maybe it needs a receiver change. What weapons did you roll with wormfood? About the scaling... I had read that if you enter a building instance after a higher level player had entered that it would scale to the first one through the door. But I guess they changed that right? Yeah, that's how it's been working but I only recently saw it in action when I started hooking up with other players in the same areas.

I will be on the lookout, thanks for the tips. Anything to learn at this stage that makes progression smoother is good.
I am playing cards that help with this stuff. One that makes food effects last longer. One that does the same for water. The one you mentioned and one to reduce rads from food and water. It has been better since I played these cards, yes. I looked for you Friday night but did not find you. I'll try again this week. Concerning the perk cards, I am a well-oiled machine by this point. I have a perk card set for at least 3 or 4 different tactical situations.

I'll see what sort of drops I get, or if I can find the plan for it and see whether I want to go rifleman or commando. No sense in splitting your potential, and should pick one or the other I think. Players seem to think DPS is king, and I guess it always is in a sense, so a VATS commando build is the meta. But that might mean a lot of ammunition crafting and VATS, which I'm not using much so far. So I'll see if I can try both before going too deep on either path. Ammo has not been an issue so far. Panzer, do you have a set loadout you roll with?
I have about 3 or 4 different loadouts. I have the heavy weapon loadout so using the level 3 "Bear Arms" perk card is a must. I'd say about 70% of the time I'm using a heavy weapon (flame thrower, 40mm grenade launcher, plasma gatling gun, .50 cal machine gun, gauss gun, etc.). The other 30% of the time I'm using a rifle, pistol or shotgun. I use VATS a lot with these weapons since it greatly increases their accuracy and since these are not rapid fire weapons they don't burn up my AP in an instant like the auto heavy weapons do.

Played 76 a lot yesterday, up to level 24 now. Still have not kicked the bucket. I wonder how long I can go without dying? That is a new side mission.
And yeah, commando is my choice. It didn't take long to start gathering ammunition. I roll with one level of Scrounger, so find enough 5.56 to support the weapon. I did a few runs through the lumber company to hunt handmade rifle drops. I've found only about 5 so far, and these resulted in semi-auto receiver mods when scrapped, so I have not been able to make many improvements to it yet. But so far it's lethal stock with a reflex sight. The handmade rifle is excellent, just what I was looking for. Recoil is very controllable, it works very well outside of VATS.
The enemy has stepped up their game, but this weapon has done the same for me. Once I get it modded up it will carry me for a long time. I plan to carry this and the Fixer, with the handmade as my carry rifle and the Fixer for clearing tight spaces and mobs. One shoots 5.56 and the other .45 so that should work out nicely indeed. My armor does feel like it is falling behind a bit, so that's something to work on. The Chinese stealth suit is my next goal there, with maybe secret service or scout armor down the line. Does weight affect stealth in 76 like it works in the previous games, or is it not a factor? I'm not so keen on the stealth suit aesthetics, but I love the features and it also has 1000 radiation protection which is like wearing a hazmat suit. Should serve me well for a long time until I can get the top suits. I sneak everywhere already, so this will all dovetail nicely indeed.
For build what I've done is invest at least three points in every SPECIAL while focusing on Perception, Agility, Intelligence and Luck. I plan to max Perception and Agility, those will be my main perk trees for stealth and weapons. But by having a few points in everything I can roll with a number of quality of life cards, striking a nice balance. Commando, Sneak and Gunsmith are all at 3. These are my core abilities, one to kill, one to survive and one to make my rifle as badass as possible.

One man army! That is some serious firepower. I'd like to find you one day and follow in your wake haha. Thanks for the reply, I was curious what you favored.

.
In my view I think the entire stealth aspect/approach has some merit when you are low level and don't want to engage too many enemies at once but I'd estimate and say that once you are about level 100 and above the entire stealth aspect goes out the window. I say this because the way the player events are structured it doesn't encourage stealth play at all. They are all "mow down waves of enemies" deals and the enemies always know where you are anyway. I personally use the Brotherhood Recon armor and it's fantastic. It's one of the top 10 rated armor sets in the game along with the Secret Service armor set.

I hear you, and don't doubt you have a great point. But I'll be light armor to the end. It's not a matter of optimal play, but one of roleplaying and doing what appeals to me. Heavy armor is not my jam. That doesn't mean I won't rock some power armor for certain missions or events I suppose. I'll be sure to have a nice set to use. But I'll rarely wear it I think. I have a mishmash of T-45 and raider pieces now, but they are stored and I have yet to try them on.

I'd say you can get by most of the time without using any power armor but there are a couple of events like "Radiation Rumble" and "Scorched Earth" where having power armor on is a HUGE benefit. Both of those events have dangerously high levels of radiation and the enemies are pretty tough.

Noted. I appreciate your insight as you've seen and done it all in 76 obviously. And any other tips or thoughts you want to share would be helpful.
Do you have a screenshot of your CAMP? Mine is pretty lame. But it's mine. A bed, a small water purifier, armor and weapons benches, a campfire for cooking, a stash box, a turret. That's all I've done so far. Quite utilitarian. I reckon it will be a while before I've unlocked enough plans to build a proper camp. One good thing about that Pitt DLC I didn't know if I wanted is it has a fusion core recharger which seems a nice gadget indeed. I won't need it, but I will build it I am sure. What's the deal with the shelter? I unlocked that through a quest, it gives you an underground space? Are you using that Panzer?
Can scrapping produce a weapon plan? Can I get the handmade rifle plan from scrapping, or will it only ever result in modification plans? I found a super mutant trader, named Grahm I think. He had the plan but it was 1900 caps which was too rich for my blood. Caps have been hard to come by, but now I am starting to see them in drops more often, and I have the perk that raises it by 33% so I'm slowly starting to amass some money. I have bought nothing at all so far (aside from small water purifier plans) just some fast travel now and then.

HA! My camp is purely practical with zero aesthetics so it's nothing to look at. Making the most awesome looking CAMP just isn't my priority so I just have the basic stuff like the armor and weapon benches as well as the chemistry station and a few of the kiosks where you can buff your attributes. Having said that, I have come across some player CAMPS that were very impressive to look at and it must have taken them dozens of hours to build it. You can't get plans from scrapping unfortunately. You'll just have to save up the caps for it and when you are low level you will be quite cap poor for a while. It wasn't until I was around level 150 where the caps just kept rolling in with no problem.

OK, same. Some camps are fantastic. I should start checking their stores. Maybe someone will be selling the handmade plan on the cheap. It is probably like a yard sale, and you never know what you'll find or how insane the price may be (either way). I have yet to inspect a player's store. Too bad we can't tempt Crane to give this a go and join the discussion. But I can't see dropping 1500 on a new PC just to play it. Well I can, but I understand others might not want to It would be cool to have another low level to talk about the game with. But the way the levels are rolling, it won't be all that long until I no longer am. I reckon by level 100 I can say I'm no longer a noob. I've averaged about 4 levels a day since I bought it a week ago, and while that pace will slow somewhat, I do feel like leveling is coming fast. I'm a statistics guy, and FO4 was around one level about every 4 hours. In FO76 it's been one every hour and a half so far. But levels do come faster at the start and I expect the ratio to converge over time. But if I start to do events I think that pace can be maintained probably. I'm in no hurry anyway, but it's fun to build it out and keep gaining new perks. I still have quite a few I want. Maybe we can tempt wormfood in to giving another go. What level did you reach wormfood before you moved on? Players lean heavily in to VATS and criticals. I sure did in FO4. But so far in 76 I am having a great time in free-aim, and use VATS when things get a little too spicy, like a ghoul mob rush. They say the Fixer has some serious kick to it, so we'll see when I get that weapon. Maybe I'll prefer VATS then. This a very handy site for planning your build. I use it to see which perks will unlock on the next level up to plan ahead a bit Nukes and Dragons FO76 Build Planner I plan to go full commando, explosives, sneak and crafting. One thing I am debating is how far to go in commando. It works like this (and does for all weapons types with the respective perk category) Full auto rifles get a damage boost from the Commando perk,as always. It is three ranks. First rank is +10%, but the second and third are +5%, for 20% total if you invest in all three. But then later at level 25 you can get Expert Commando, which works exactly the same, 10, 5 and 5. And at level 45 you can take Master Commando. So to get the full 60% increase it costs nine points. But what if I went 3 points in to Commando, but just one point in to both Expert and Master? That would mean +40% damage for a five-point investment, leaving four points free for something else. Is it worth four points for 20%? That will be the question.

It's heavy (11 lbs) and it does indeed have a lot of kick so VATS is really a must for this rifle. Concerning the player stores at their CAMPS, most of them have cheaper prices for things compared to the NPC vendors so definitely check those out when you can. Bear in mind that many of these players have been playing the game for a long time like me so they probably have all or almost all of the plans available in the game so what they have in their stores they will usually sell cheap since they want to get rid of it.

Oh one other tip which I don't think has been brought up yet.
Be careful about committing a crime and becoming "wanted". If you are Wanted that overrides the "pacifist" mode setting. Anyone can shoot and kill you when you are wanted.
Certain things like picking the lock on something at another player's camp will make you wanted. Also if you pick the lock on something at a workshop that has already been taken over by another player.

I bought this game on Steam sale last week. Just got started. When someone in this forum plays a 8 year old game and still have discussions about it in the forum I guess it is a sign of quality.

Well, it's me. I talk about whatever game I'm on, endlessly. And that drives the discussion, or I hope it does. Look at Elite. That forum here is dead unless I'm playing, in which case the discussion picks back up because I post about it. Crazy. But I am happy to know there's another noob! What's you name in the game Wigean? I'm ExitOversteer so look out for me. I hope you find it suits you, FO76. I'd be interested to know what you are up to and talk about whatever come to mind. Just occurred to me that Wigean may be talking about FO4 since 76 came out five years ago.

(I think) Without reading the whole thread I need some clearifiction. Are we talking Fallout 4, Fallout 4 + add-on or Fallout 76? This thread started with Fallout 4, but I realise there could be some twists and turns somewhere hidden in the 42 pages?

This thread started with FO4, then added New Vegas and is now on 76. It's all in the thread title haha.
But yeah, FO4 is part of the discussion and a game I like a lot. The last couple of pages have been about 76 however.
In these pages is every perk I've taken in FO4, every point spent (except level 93 haha). I hope it helps!

Ah ok, that explains it. I think it's just the case that I FEEL like I've been playing FO76 for 8 years.
