I saw a couple of movies last weekend, and I am a bit bummed out because both of them were good. I'm destined to see some bad movies, again, soon...
1) "Prey" (2022) -- Before anyone groans and moans, I get it. I see why there are folks who might not like this movie because a small girl is the lead protagonist against an interstellar badass. That said--and I was one of the skeptics--I went in watching this movie based on the writing and worldbuilding alone, and the recommendation of a friend, and I came out surprised. This movie was great! They were fair in the character design and as an added bonus we got to see *****spoiler alert***** smelly French pioneers get wasted, too. That was excellent. *****end spoiler alert***** My only issue was the very end of the film, but overall, this was the best "Predator" sequel yet. Not that the other Predator sequels were any good--most weren't. One was okay, actually, but for the most part they were pretty bad. No, this movie isn't realistic. No, a little girl whooping a giant alien's butt isn't realistic. But neither was a buff dude carrying a chaingun through a jungle, mowing down a forest of trees with seemingly unlimited ammo realistic, either. These movies have never been realistic. They are about kicking alien ass. And that is what we have here. This was fun. Probably one of the best pure modern action movies I have seen in a long time. *** 1/2 out of **** stars. I would watch this again, easily.
2) "Black Rainbow" -- What a nice find. Rosanna Arquette, who always was the better half of the mid '80s "Desperately Seeking Susan" starred in this weird, captivating horror/thriller. I did not remember to drink my smoothie, so by default this enters "good" territory. The plot kept moving and held my interest throughout, always wanting to see what happened next. My only issue was the bizarre ending--which I typically love. The writer/director seemed as if he wanted to enter Lynchian/Cronenbergian territory, and touch upon surrealism, however didn't quite exploit that far enough. Likely this was due to a slimmer budget, however with a bit of creativity he could have pulled it off. Regardless, I enjoyed this film quite a bit. *** 1/4 out of **** stars.

Wow, Tom Hulce (Mozart in Amadeus) was in it. I think he pretty much quit acting sometime in the late 1990's. edit: An odd coincidence just occurred to me. I never saw "Black Rainbow" but I did see "Parenthood" which came out the same year. The odd coincidence is that both Tom Hulce and Jason Robards were in both movies! Maybe they became friends after that? LOL

Think of Deadwood less as a western and more of a crime/mobster drama set in the 1870s Black Hills.

Ian McShane is also in "Sexy Beast" , really good movie with Ben Kingsley and Ray Winstone, as a British gangster.

First time I recall noticing Ian McShane was in his major role in the Babylon 5 tv movie "River of Souls". I had seen Battle of Britain before that but I just completely didn't realize that was him as one of the RAF pilots.

No sequel was made. My question is when they were standing in the front to balance the bus, why didn't 3 or 4 of them go farther into the driver's area? WIKI: EndingAccording to a "Making Of" documentary, producer Deeley was unsatisfied with the four written endings and conceived the current ending as a literal cliffhanger appropriate to an action film which left an opportunity for a sequel. The documentary describes how helicopters would save the bus seen on the cliff at the end of the first film. In interviews in 2003 and 2008, Michael Caine revealed that the ending would have had Croker "crawl up, switch on the engine and stay there for four hours until all the petrol runs out... The van bounces back up so we can all get out, but then the gold goes over."
In 2008, the Royal Society of Chemistry held a competition for a solution that had a basis in science, was to take not more than 30 minutes and did not use a helicopter. The idea was to promote greater understanding of science, and to highlight the 100th anniversary of the periodic table, on which gold is one of the 118 elements. The winning entry, by John Godwin of Surrey, was to break and remove two large side windows just aft of the pivot point and let the glass fall outside to lose its weight; break two windows over the two front axles, keeping the broken glass on board to keep its weight for balance; let a man out on a rope through the front broken windows (not to rest his weight on the ground) who deflates all the bus's front tyres, to reduce the bus's rocking movement about its pivot point; drain the fuel tank, which is aft of the pivot point, which changes the balance enough to let a man get out and gather heavy rocks to load the front of the bus. Unload the bus. Wait until a suitable vehicle passes on the road, hijack it, and carry the gold away in it

Been binge watching "Three Body" on YT, based on the books of Liu Cixin, the three body problem. Its in Chinese but has English subs, really good and extremely refreshing to watch something that isn't trying to preach "the message" to us in every scene. I haven't read the books but have seen a lot of YT vids about the lore and whatnot, they sound amazing and will definitely be buying them soon. The Last of Us Episode 3.
Was decent despite being gayer than Liberace.
Lol, I just watched that episode. It was sad and unexpected. I felt for sure the stranger would grab his gun while he played the piano. Couldn't watch the kissing scenes.
If you watch Jaws backwards, it's a heart warming story about a shark that spits out so many people that they have to open a beach.

Just finished Death's End last night. I might have to check it out. It's a great book series.

Yeah the books sound absolutely amazing and as I said will be acquiring them shortly.
The ids on YT are great and really well done, up to number 14 now, I think you have to have an account if you want to watch them all but they release 4 episodes per week between Sunday and Wednesday which are free to watch.
Anyone interested in sci fi should at least check out either this or the books. 👍
