Yeah the whole disintegration thing is pretty hard to believe--unless of course they figured out a way to dismantle the subatomic particles within an atom but... dun dun dun... a whole lot of energy would be released. That would be bad.

This 3 hours Indian film lit up Netflix.

Indian movies don't interest me one bit but their food is great.

I saw two movies last weekend:

1) "Sinister" -- Rare does a movie live up to their namesake, particularly when their titular premise is foreboding. This one made me actually feel... uneasy throughout. And though I knew what the ending should be--given Hollywood there is always the chance it may not, the film kept hold of me throughout until the finale. I liked this horror film. Young children and squeamish would do well to avoid. There's some creepy, dark stuff here. *** out of **** stars.

2) "Colossal" -- Well this was something different. I don't really care for the alcoholism/drinking scene, at all. I've been known to avoid situations involving people drinking--they simply make me feel uncomfortable. I grew up in a family full of alcoholics on both sides, surrounded by them. Such stupor is amusing in small doses, but bathe a whole childhood in them and one grows wary of the entire scene. Part of this stems from the Irish in me, the other half I suppose came from the Polish. Regardless, I knew not that this film would feature such behavior from the get go. See, when I pick a movie to watch I often read one line. Yep. One sentence. That's how I decide if something is worth my time. I read a single line that describes the premise of the plot and that's about it. Then I'll check the review scores and trend. I've seen so many films that this is all I need. After all, way back when TV Guide was all we had to go on, there we'd only have a paragraph at best. I digress. This film tries to be like "Being John Malkovich," and at times has one wondering WTF they are watching. This can be good. Still, the charm that is present in "Malkovich" -- one of the absolute finest pictures of the 90s, is not quite found here. Entertainment can be found, with a heaping of quirkiness, but alas, there's a few ingredients missing leaving it short of a tasty cake. Likely I should award another half star, but whatever, my gut tells me to award this ** 1/2 out of **** stars and so I am. I could not connect with any of the characters at all, whatsoever, in a pleasant way. Those without avarice to alcoholism may find otherwise and rate this higher.

We just saw this in cinema. Our $$$ flew away!

I'll wait to watch that on streaming. The critic reviews I read about Bullet Train basically boiled down to "pretty good action caper but nothing great".

My dad let me watch Amityville Horror when I was a kid. That movie is ALL about the suspense and it shows that with brilliant writing you don't have to show any blood or gore in order to scare an audience.

Rashomon, I don't even know what to make of it, other than what a bunch of liars. I may have to watch it again sometime soon. The last guy was probably the most truthful. I also don't think there's too many people who can get away with making a film about a couple people telling different versions of the same story. Particularly where much of it is either at the "court house" or the witnesses discussing it later while sheltering from the rain. That actress who played the wife, nailed it in every version of the story.



Also watched The Wind Rises. An animated sort of fictionalized biography of Jiro Horikoshi, a Mitsubishi engineer and designer of the A6M Zero. Weird in some of the styling and sound effects, he has dreams where he talks to his hero Giovanni Caproni about making airplanes.
Some cool glimpses into history, you see the 1923 earthquake and subsequent fires of Tokyo. The engineers fighting against the backwardness of how things are done. None of the engineers ever set foot or eyes on what their designing until test flight time. They also disassemble the built aircraft, load it on oxcart to be dragged over the course of two days to the nearest airfield because the design and production are that far away from the field. And you also got to see bits of all the man hours that went into designing and building those things by hand. Got to see lots of slide rules in action, and I still have no idea how they work, but clearly that was an important art.

Kurosawa was an exceptional director to say the least and movie audiences back in 1950 were just a tad different from what they are now as far as attention span and preferences go.

Just finished episode 9 of House of the Dragon. If you guys are in any way remotely interested in the fantasy genre then this is a MUST watch series.

My class in nuclear power school, in 1976, was either the last, or second to last, to use slide rules. They switched over to calculators after that. I had that part easier than a lot of the guys. I had started using a slide rule back in 5th grade. By the end of high school I could make one sing. The only scale I had to learn at nuclear power school was the natural log scale, as I never had a use for it until then. They issued us the typical plastic slide rules, but I went out and bought a nice bamboo slide rule.

They are pretty easy to use. The tricky part for many folks is keeping track of where the decimal point belongs.

Now I know. Not too dissimilar from some dive "computers" I've used when SCUBA diving. That was just a type of circular slide rule to help figure you nitrogen levels and things. It was very handy.

I also watched Dune, the new Villeneuve one. I think I liked it better on this second watch. The pacing, music, sound effects and just general atmosphere is just perfect. And that they did a fairly good job sticking to the source material and still made a good movie off of it is just the icing.

Halloween Ends. This series was messed up long ago Just like the Terminator movies. After Terminator 1 and 2, everything was wing it!

I liked it quite a bit and while there are some aspects of the Lynch film that I like more, the Villeneuve vision worked well enough for me.

If the movies continue to make a boat load of money everything else is irrelevant. I find it rather amusing that simple fact is lost on Forbes!
